Hiya.
Looking for any help and advice really, I have been having symptoms (thirst, peeing more - smells sweet sorry for tmi, sweet taste and/or dry mouth and dizziness)

I’m morbidly obese so it’s no surprise to me really I should’ve taken better care of myself; I’m 29 & 16st 12lb. I have PCOS (unmedicated).

Obviously with Covid I can’t really attend my Surgery yet; I’m waiting for a call back from my GP to discuss.

Im quite scared to be honest, I have absolutely zero clue about blood sugar levels or anything - I’ve read that going low carb or Keto is the way to go, I’ve been using MyFitnessPal to keep my carbs under 130g daily - a low carb level I believe or is this wrong? I am absolutely clueless so any advice and help please send my way. Thank you and well wishes to you all x

Welcome to the forums.

We have many members who are well informed with regards to low carbing, although I'm not really one of them.

I can tell you that 150g is a moderate carb intake and that we have some members who are consuming around 20g or less per day.

I'll tag a few of our gurus and maybe they'll stop by with some advice.

Well you really need to speak with your dr but low carb/keto is often used for weight loss and pcos not just diabetes so maybe whilst you wait for that conversation you could do some reading and understanding and start to plan how you might make changes. The dr is likely to want to do tests so perhaps wait til you have them before starting anything drastic.

A good place to start is dietdoctor.com. And my first recipe site was ditchthecarbs.com.

Hi and welcome 130gm/day max of carbs is a good start point which should help you lose weight and blood sugar. If you can go even lower it would be great but 130gm is a good start.

Hello and welcome,

I'm one of the people who stick to less than 20g of carbs a day. I find it easier to only eat things with no or very low carbs- this includes things like eggs, meat fish and some seafood, hard cheese, cream. I have lost weight without focusing on it and without doing huge amount of exercise for the first time in my life.

Depending on when you expect the door to get back to you you could invest in a meter and start testing. Don't bother if it is likely the doctor will get back to you soon. The doctor will likely order blood tests and that will provide some information.

Whether you not you currently do have diabetes my personal view is that it can't hurt to lower your carb intake. At best you will be delaying (perhaps forever) actually becoming diabetes at worst it will be a start to treating your diabetes. Even if all you do is read and become aware of what carbs different foods have it will give you a head start should you need it.

Welcome

Oh an by the way- excess weight can be a symptom of diabetes rather than the cause so don't get stuck in the spiral of self blame that I did. It was only by reducing my carb intake that I learned what it felt like to feel satisfied and to just stop eating as I had had sufficient. I have lost weight without feeling hungry.

Hello @Starkatx ,

It does sound likely that T2's either hot on your heels or present already, though we can't diagnose on here. Between PCOS and your other symptoms (weight gain being one of them, make no mistake... It's a symptom, not a cause, and you didn't know carbs were problematic!), what you want to do now is get yourself a meter. I don't know how long Covid-19 is going to keep you from getting a HbA1c done, which is a 3 month average of blood sugars. But if it takes a while and you're doing low carb, your numbers should go down, and you'll not be diagnosed a T2, if, at present, you are one. Simply because the numbers won't be present. So you want to log your current numbers, to see what they're doing, so you can hand them over when the time comes, and you can add what measures you took to fix the problem. (So basically, keep a diary with both what you ate and the resulting numbers. You want to test before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite. The difference should be no higher than 2.0 mmol/l, preferably lower). Anyway.... You're off to a good start. Have a read here, https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html , it might help you some. Also, dietdoctor is excellent, and so is Dr. Jason Fung's the Diabetes Code. And this place's website and forum are nothing to sneeze at either.

In any case, you will be okay. You didn't do this to yourself, but you do have the power to take control. You already are.

Hugs,
Jo

I agree with Jo. If you are diagnosed with T2 your doctor is most unlikely to give you a meter. If you want to get one anyway we can help.

I am a 20g gal myself. I enjoy my food and I am rarely hungry.

I thoroughly recommend the book Jo mentioned, it also references PCOS. Dr Fung also has YouTube videos.

If you do get a meter, download the mysugr app to record your food and readings. It's free and I found it highly motivating.
