Hba1C

I think one point in old money appears to worth about 7 points in new money. You would have to go up more than 7 to make the old number click up one. 42 and 44 only being two points apart ....the old meter does not move.

Hi Squire,
I am mystified by the conversion table on this site that converts HbA1c to average glucose in mmol/L. For a 1c of 50 it gives an average of 9.0 mmol/L! (Other sites give 8.2 mmol/L for 50)

9.0 seems a very high average glucose for a HbA1c which just comes into the diabetic range by a factor of two points?
I think this is all a black art! :-) ;-)
BTW are you a hitch hikers guide to the galaxy fan? 42 was the answer to life, the universe and everything! :-)

regards
Derek

Just had my Hba1C test result, it was 42, can somebody tell me what that is in old money and is it OK ?
Hi Celast,
Your doing extremely well with your HbA1c. I was diagnosed at 50 in October and it hadn't dropped in January when I was retested.
I have lost 10 kilos by cutting carbs but now I've embarked on the low G.I. diet as suggested by Squire.
Keep up the good work.

Hi everyone

I am new on here, I have had Type 2 diabetes for about 5 years, have been in a bit of denial was shocked to be diagnosed with it. I am currently taking 4x 500mg metformin, my latest Hbaic was 65% which I think is about 8.5 in old terms, this is the highest I have been, last one was 7.7 and docs wanted to put me on glycdizide then, but I asked for more time to try and bring it down, evidently without success, I am feeling very fed up and desperate as I really do not wont to go on more meds, I was thinking of going on the newcastle diet or low carb, can anyone suggest anything to a now desperate upset diabetic. I am currently 14st 7lb have been this for many years, more or less, although have tried many diets. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi meJuie. I think you should definitely move to a low-carb diet using the meter to check results. There are many links on this forum to suitable low-carb approaches. If your BMI is on the high side, then you are probably insulin resistant and Gliclazide may not help much as it will prod the pancreas to produce more insulin and you may already be producing too much. Metformin is a good drug if you are overweight and the highest priority is a low-carb, low-GI diet. Don't go for a 'brand-name' diet; just follow the large amount of carb advice on the forum. If your HBa1C stays above 7'ish even with a low-carb diet then there are other meds such as Sitagliptin and the non-insulin injectables that your GP may consider.

Hi

Thanks for reply, will def try low carb, just need to get to grips with it and find out some more info, seems daunting. Have looked at patrick holfords low GI diet, anyone tried it? all feels a bit confusing.

I think thats the wrong converter Squire, it just converts mmol/L into mg/dl. Or the UK to the USA readings which cvan be easily converted by dividing or multiplying by 18.

Yes I know, I found that out for myself yesterday. I tried to copy and paste the link twice more and gave up because I got the same result. I deleted another post when apologising and just gave up in the end.

This is not by way of making excuses but yesterday was an anus horribles (sic). Nothing went right and some unbelievable things went wrong. I won't go on about the driver who took about 16 attempts to reverse his car into his driveway for which I got hooted at for being parked nearby. I shuttled up and down to help him but he was beyond help. Anyway, don't start me off.

Sorry, I will try to do better next time.

Hey Squire, sounds like you certainly had a day of it yesterday, I hope things turn out better for you today
