Hello i haven't got diabetes my husband has just been diagnosed with type 1 i find it hard to understand is there any other members who do not have diabetes but just want to help there loved ones and know and understand how to do that?

I’m the one in our family who has diabetes but I just wanted to say a big welcome and well done for supporting your husband and being willing to learn about his condition. My husband has been so supportive of me and it is such a help, he just eats what I eat and doesn’t complain.

Thank you yes we eat meals together I look at it as a healthy new start. I just don’t understand how his levels are down when we are trying to eat all the right foods. I think he may need more carbs as he starts to feel tired and gets muddled sometimes

Hello and welcome @Cookies70s :)

How is he managing with his insulin ? Has he got a good grasp of things ? My partner lets me get on with it, he knows the basics and to be honest that's all he really needs to know apart from being patient with me if I go low or struggling with high Bg levels. He doesn't get involved other than that. As a type 1 only I can manage it, it may sound selfish but only I know what to do or how much insulin to take etc, it's a not a condition that can be easily shared but as I generally feel it when high/low then it really is down to me to put that right, if I was to take insulin at set times then maybe he could be more involved but it's more like continuous daily management care, so hence why mental support is vital in a partnership.

He has managed really well 6 weeks diagnosed although he has got transfixed on the numbers he wanted to get them down in the 6.6’s which he has but now feels tired and sometimes muddled I think he needs more carbs 18 units of insulin on evening. Thanks for your comments I do worry too much I just want to help him but what you said makes good sense

IMO the very best thing you could do for him would be to buy him a copy of Dr Bernstein's great classic"Diabetes Solution", and read it yourself. Maybe read it together. You can also read extracts from it here: http://www.diabetes-book.com
There are also lots of short videos by Dr B on his site, and you can even send in your questions and listen to Dr Bernstein giving answers once a month. He is THE acknowledged expert on the use of insulin, and also on the healing effects of the low carb diet, having kept himself alive and in good shape despite his T1 diabetes for 83 years!
