Help please - snacking!

Not sure if this is the right forum or not - I think it is as it is to do with low carb.

I'm trying to shift us as a family towards low carb - husband also type 2 and we are both overweight. 3 young people living at home - no weight issues but good time to learn healthy eating.

I am also wanting to shift more towards vegetarian/vegan lifestyle (shame as I love meat - but it is making me feel unwell at the moment, so I might just keep it as a special treat occasionally!).

I did a good lunch - omelette and I didn't have bread or potatoes to go with it.

By about 4pm I had that huge hole in the tummy empty feeling and had nothing with which to fill it other than carb laden food! I need to work out some handy low carb snacks that will just fill the breach between lunch and supper.

Any ideas please (cheap and easy to do being a key factor!)

Dishonesty, selfishness and lack of empathy.
One of my faves is a couple thin slices of ham (El cheapo lol) with cream cheese (value version) spread in it then rolled up and munched. I also add a couple olives but they're either a love or hate item! A hard boiled egg is also rather satisfying. If you like celery (ewww), you can spread it with pate or cream cheese.

Any good?

Edit - can I blame the fact I've been writing Christmas cards for two hours for my brain drain? Penny just dropped that you're looking for veggie snacks - maybe post on veggie forum?

I bought crab sticks thinking they are made from fish so should be healthy. But they do contain a lot of sugar.

Cheers ,did not know that, have not bought them since before I was diagnosed and just assumed they would be ok, but I do check all labels these days so hopefully would have been ok...........

Also have been known to dump a jar of tuna in a bowl with some mayo as a quick snack....

People who think they know everything.
I normally go for a couple of Brazil nuts or walnuts, a very large glass cold water or a small piece of cheese. My current favourite snack is bits of crunchy veg (not carrots) which can be prepared in advance and kept in a Tupperware box which I dip in flavoured oil and crunch (I have chilli, sesame or truffle dipping oils for exactly this reason - I got mine from Lidl). Cauliflower dipped in sesame oil is gorgeous.

Veggie snacks I have without carbs are celery or cucumber or pepper sometimes with peanut butter or cheese. Also, if you like avocados, half or one of those is filling. I have also had raw courgette in slices, raw baby corn and cubed raw marrow. I also ate a tin of mackerel fillets in tomato sauce the other day because I was having a food craving and it was really satisfying.

Also, not sure about carb content but a hot full-fat milky drink is filling.

You can definitely run into this problem if you're trying to do both low carb and low fat. Very hard to do both at the same time, there's a big calorie (and satiety) deficit. Maybe reconsider if giving up meat (and possibly reducing saturated fats in the process) is the best thing to be doing at the same time that you're trying to give up carbs. Personally I don't think that it is.

Posting this here is fine .

Nibble snack and low carb too ?

Lettuce parcels are my own personal favourite .

Plonk in your own salad(y) favourite things inside a large lettuce leaf .
Chicken , ham , cheeses , pepper slices , cherry tomatoes , celery,
grated carrot, egg sliced up, radishes, cucumber, etc ...
You can put plenty in these too - really tasty and filling .
Add in your own fave sauce , roll them up , place on a smallish plate and enjoy .

I often have these as they help me with my own BG levels .

Cheese. :D

We usually have 3 or 4 varieties in the fridge, and Mr B grabs a slice or two whenever he is feeling peckish.

I tend to go down the 70% choc route. I am rarely hungry, but sometimes want the taste of something, and the choc fits the bill.

If you are out and about, and need something that fits in a handbag and doesn't make a mess, then mini choc bars (grren and blacks do some v expensive, but Lidl's and Aldi's both do some too. the lower carb 9 bars are also good. And nuts. little mini packets of nuts.

I have a variety of snacks including nuts, Tyrells Sweet and Salty Poshcorn (6g carbs per bag), Babybel cheese, Ryvita Crackerbread spread with either peanut butter or Full fat Philadelphia Cheese, 9 bar, rice cakes, Green and Black mini chocolate bars etc. Some of these do contain a few carbs but I have tested them so know that I can eat them without too much affect on my BS.

My question is: what kind of "Low carb" approach are you following?

If your goal is staying in ketosis, some of the foods mentioned are going to inhibit that. If your goal is staying under a certain number of carbs (50g, 100g, etc) that would give us an idea of what to recommend.

Perhaps the best thing you can tell us is how many grams of carbs these snacks should contain (ex: 10g or less)

Crab sticks are incredibly processed, and I'd guess quite low crab (yes crab, not carb), at the price points they seem to command. If you fancy some fishiness, the a cheapo can of sardines in oil (or water, if you don't fancy the drained oil versions). In Lidl, sardines are only abut 60-70p a can, I think, so probably as cheap as crab sticks and far more identifiable.

I'm not a snacker, nor have I ever been; I've always eaten decent meals and been fine with that. Since diagnosis, I have continued that way and probably have a snack every 2 or 3 months?

If you are finding yourself hungry, then maybe a slightly larger lunch could be the answer? That way, your system gets a chance to work on lunch before it's being asked to perform again at dinner.

There are many ways to skin this diabetes cat. Good luck with it all.

Thanks,

Those ideas are really helpful.

I signed onto the low carb diet thing on this website - not wholly sure what I'm supposed to be looking for - I watched week 1 video and saw the meal plan. Not really any clearer and too busy to really just take the time to sit and work my way through it all! Funds are very tight - and the meal plan I don't think would work for us! However, I shall persist - maybe keep some of the fats in at the moment.

I'll keep a tub of sliced veggies and maybe a carton of hummus - I wonder if that is low carb - I'll have to look; but I could eat that easily!

Mayo is lower carb than hummus, and mixed with Greek yogurt makes a tasty dip for veggies. Raw or salted nuts are also a good snack, not too expensive.

I would agree with PP, though, that if you're feeling hungry at 4 pm your lunch wasn't good enough. How many eggs did you have in the omelette, any cheese/cream in it, and what about veggies? Was it fried in good fat, like butter, ghee or coconut oil? A green salad, dressed with olive oil, on the side? Healthy fats and adequate amounts of protein keep us satiated.

Good luck with finding what works for you and your family!

It's not as healthy to do low carb and low fat. You'll run into trouble. Low carb is better run on high fat. Veggies can be quite high in carbs. Being veggie is hard and if you like meat why give it up?! You said it's making you Ill but maybe you need to see what else is in your diet that could be making you ill. If you are eating a lot of diary that might be making you feel unwell. High fat means you'll crave less carbs and be hungry for longer.
