Help please to make me fatter!

Hi, I'm doing really well on BG control on a reduced carb diet, but losing tons of weight and everyone says I'm skinny now. Don't think I am, with a BMI of 22, but probably over-lean and look stringy!
QUESTION, what's good to eat that would bulk me up without adding carbs? I already graze on nuts and cheese, any other good ideas for mainly snacky things that will add to my weight? (Apologies to those struggling to lose weight, we all have a different cross to bear!)

I am a a skinny I had lost weight before being DX as DB and believe me putting weight on is awesomely difficult :( I had some advice from a dietician who suggested adding cream to soups also eating more pulses but I have to be very careful because too many send BGs up .The nuts are ok avocado is good I eat loads of cheese and if I do have bread (Burgen is not too bad) I have loads of cheese toast or put lots of butter on .My chol is ok with this and I have now reached 7 stone (JUST)
I would also like ant more ideas that will not put my BGs up .No steak pie and mash with gravy recipes please :lol:

But I got one made with almond flour pie crust and fauxtatoes! :wink:

Thanks Patch but I dont like almond flour pastry but I do have braised steak with celairiac mash and onion and red wine gravy and loads of veg

Like Grazer I want to cover my bones .In some places it would be good to build muscle but in other places maybe a bit of fat would cover better For instance I have a skinny neck and skinny upper chest where there are no muscles to build I am a 60 something granny so I aint goin to get a body beautiful :lol: but to put on a few more pounds would be good

Well it's a puzzle and no mistake! :? Have you tried snacking on something like nuts which have healthy natural fats + protein + carbs. Maybe try the ones like cashews or peanuts which are not strictly speaking "nuts" and tend to have more carbs BUT are still a real whole food with a natural balance of nutrients. Just be wary of the ones roasted in vegetable oils.

Have you looked at your average total daily calories over a week or so? Are you eating enough? Are you eating sufficient naturally occurring fats?

Protein can help with lean/muscle mass so long as you also use weight-training -- so far as I understand it anyway.

How about eating real peanut butter straight from the jar, or get some Devon clotted cream and again just eat it off the spoon? Dark chocolate 70% cocoa or higher?

How do you feel? Are others saying you look painfully skinny or are you going by a BMI chart or some-such? How do you compare to older photos of yourself?

Thanks for your concern pianoman,we skinnies dont get a lot of help because we are a minority and also there is not a lot of advice to give :(
I snack on various nuts Brazils are good also almonds I have walnuts with double cream for my 2nd breakfast .1st being Burgen toast with as much cheese as will fit on it.I try to eat regularly on full fat everything and snack in between so feeding my face every 2 hours or so I dont seem to have any other problems that could cause me not to gain weight .It has gone on very slowly over the 2 years I have been DX as type2 DB It is hard to eat well for DB I dont want to increase my meds 2x 1g Glucophage .My Hba1c is 6.9 I would like it lower but I think that I will have to live with that for now. I feel fine, Blood pressure improved, good BGs, fitter because of regular exercise, not lacking in energy - but I continue to lose weight! Not actually underweight at 12 and a quarter stone and 6ft !, (this gives BMI of about 22) BUT in all my photos now I look scrawny! And weight is still going down. People do also say "gosh, aren't you skinny now!" Don't get that! Not sure they'd like that if I said, "Yes, and you're remarkably fat". I think I eat a reasonable amount, but I did a calorie count and it's only about 1700 a day on average, so I need to find some good extra Cals (with not too many carbs) to get the figure up a bit I guess. I'm thinking grilled bacon for nibbles? I'll try the neat peanut butter too, I've got a jar in the fridge.

Just an idea the GP prescribed me a product called Calogen it is a disgusting drink just like drinking lard :twisted: I am a wimp :mrgreen: It did help me to get to my 7 stone I have stopped taking it now as it gave me heartburn ,even bigger wimp :!: but it may help you as it adds cals without adding carbs

Hiya Malc!

I have the same problem. I have managed to get my weight up half a stone now to 7 stone! Lots of Avocado, nuts and seeds - pumpkin and sesame seeds are good sprinkled on salads etc. Also, lunch most days is a whole chicken breast (roasted in olive oil), salad and a mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar poured over it - usually followed by a couple of sliced strawberries and cream. I had a real binge on olives at one time - they are very fattening little blighters, but I was a tad worried about the salt content.

In addition, I bake batches of muffins using almond flour instead of wheat flour and store them in the freezer so I always have a quick (fairly fattening) snack to take with me. Low-carb ham and cheese muffins have very few carbs (maybe 3g per muffin) and are a good tasty way to get some calories in you! Choc and banana are pretty good, too, but a bit higher in carb (maybe 7g per muffin).

Perhaps your natural weight is low. People come in all shapes and sizes, do they not?
On the other hand my own first symptom was unexplained weight loss - if I had been dieting I could have lost an awful lot of weight before anyone twigged that it was type2 causing it. For some people skinniness is a sign of the illness. Only good control will help.

Take half a pound of best butter and a jar of good quality peanut butter (minus the sugar, palm oil and other 'stuff' that some manufacturers seem to want to put in it), or make your own by blitzing peanuts in a blender.

Place in a food processor and whizz up with a bit of sweetener to taste. Dollop in a recepticle and bung in the fridge. You could roll it into balls and then coat with bitter chocolate but you'll probably end up eating it straight off the spoon.
Tomorrow, I'm making the same with macadamias. Keeps me going forever on a night shift but I don't 'arf get some funny looks.
