I do not have diabetes
Ok i will start at the beggining

Mon 11 Aug
we had spent most of this dayt in the garden as it was a nice day and my son kept going in and out of the house. later that evening when we went in we found that he had been helping himself to coke and sweets and crisps eating a multi pack of crisps a 2 lt bottle of coke and a multi pack of kit kats. not supprisingly he told us he felt sick and had a tummy ache. we put this down to what he had eaten and didnt think anything of it. a little later he started being sick and we told him to get some sleep and he would feel a lot better in the morning.

Tue 12 Aug
i got up at about 6 when i went in to my sons room he was very cold and grumpy i put him in to a warm bath to try and warm him up. but he didnt even realise i had done so. i got him out the bath with in about 10 min he was a little warmer. i took him down stairs and his breathing was a little funny so i called nhs direct they told me someone would ring back with in a few minutes. they rang back very quickly and i explained he just didnt seem right and was not very responsive kept going back to sleep.
they told us to get to the hopital quickly i got in the car with out thinking about it and drove straight to the hospital.

when we got to the hospital to sign in they took us straight through to resus. they started to try and get a line in but were having no luck after a short time they drilled straight in to his leg to put a line straight in to his bone. after this his vains become easier to access and they then put in a central line and more tubes and wires.

after what seemend like forever they told us that he had diabetes type 1 and his levels read as so b/g 17.5 keytones 7.4 and his ph was 6.3 and the next few hours were crittical.

the next few days were a blur but with each day he slowly got better we were asked loads of questions on how we had missed all the signs

we explaind that we had taken him to the doctors over the amount of liquid he would drink they done a wee test on him (nothing else) and sent it off i phoned for the results a few days later and was told all was ok and nothing to worrie about.

we were then asked about his weight loss and we told them we had noticed and were keeping an eye on him but he had also shot up in hight about an 1" and 1/2" and we had put it down to this.

they asked if he was tyred often which we said yes but this was normal for him he would come home from pre-school and school and have a sleep so this was normal

since leaving the hospital we have been ok his levels have been between 4.3 and 13 which is a little high but it is dropping down day by day

now we have been contacted by child protective services as they belive we neglected our son and didnt get medical help quickly

the doctors now have said we they gave us a wee pot but we didnt return it for testing and we missed everything has anyone else had anytning like this what can we do please

any help would be great
many thanks R

Oh Gosh, that's such a sad story, I wish I could help you .. but rest assured you have come to the right place and someone soon with the right experience will come along and give you some help and words of wisdom xx

Sorry about your lads diagnosis with type 1 diabetes, it does appear he showed all the classic signs of diabetes, weight loss, thirst, tiredness and such.

Just keep in contact with his diabetes team and they will keep advising you on adjusting his insulin doses to stabilise his bg levels, as for the Child Protection Service, it's really difficult to comment on and your best bet is to seek legal advice from your local Citizens Advice or contact Diabetes UK, they may be able to help you or point you in the right direction.

looking back you look at it and think yep all fits but having had no knowledge of diabetes in the past we missed parts of it. but did go to the docs and say he is drinking way to much

Well you need to mention this, it will all be on record at the gp surgery. Good luck and hope all works out well.

when we went to the docs for the excessive thirst they done a wee sample gave me results over phone saying all ok and now have no record of a wee test being done

If it took a few days to get the results, then maybe they sent it off to a lab who should have records. Sounds like the surgery are trying to shift blame.

Hello, what a horrible experience for you all. I am so pleased your son is now out of danger and starting to feel better. The wee pot incident, you did say he had a wee test sent off and all was okay and nothing to worry about.? If he had diabetes, then it would of showed up in the test, as you now know children can deteriorate very quickly with type 1, I know as my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter was critically ill on HDU before diagnosis and was fighting for her life. Previously her dad took her to A&E because he was concerned about her, incompetent doctor said she had a viral infection and sent away,so went back home, during the night she was vomiting, delirious, so an emergency dash to hospital and she was monitored. Now the previous doctor who is a professional medical person, didn't diagnose possible diabetes, I missed little signs, but she was a grumpy 2 1/2 year old and she still had a nap during the day. So how are parents supposed to actually know the symptoms of type 1,? GP's and doctors make many, many mistakes with missed diagnosis. of medical conditions.
If there was nothing more you could of done and no neglect took place, then be honest with all questioning and also your GP will have records of the urine test results and appointments. It must be awful to be accused of such a thing, the CAB could be very helpful as well. Best wishes RRB

There should be a confirmation available from the lab that your son's specimen went too. If you want to take this further you will have to find out the lab name.. And ask themfor written confirmatiom that was sent to gp.

Have you got legal aid either through house insurance or employers.. If so ask to speak to one of their solicitors. If money no issue find best family solicitor that you can.

In the meantime with your son... Is he on injections or pump? Some CCG's like mine offer newly diagnosed children under the age of 12 a pump. However, this is down to each and every CCG to make up their own rules.

I would personally ask, if it was me for a full copy of your son's medical records. You will have to pay for these.

As for you as parents, my heart and best wishes goes out to you. It's tough enough to be dealing with diabetes as parents let alone the additional threats that have been made. I think personally that the situation you have been placed in is disgusting, and I so wish you well..and your son too.

What a terrible situation to find yourselves in. You need from now on to document everything you have done and did. Keep a record of when you phoned the GP for the results, who gave you the sample bottle etc. If a social worker visits write down what they say and do.
Are you in this country? We have Child Protection Services not 'Protective'.
Hopefully they will see sense and realise that you are not experts in Diabetes - you soon will be.

I'm glad your son's recovering well, with two small people myself I know how quickly they can deteriorate and certainly with one of mine, he's a beanpole to start with so any weightloss would be hard to see.

One thing that springs to mind here is that this seems a bit like double standards. Looking back at my own diagnosis (I had no previous exoerience of T1 at all) I had all the classic symptoms for about 4 months before I went to the doctors and was in hospital two days later. No-one is now questioning my competence at looking after myself, but put yourself in the position of a parent and it seems you're expected to know everything about every possible disease.

It seems to me that you reacted pretty quickly when your son's symptoms became acute so you did absolutely the right thing and I find it hard to see what more you could have done. As for social services, I've had dealings with them before as my son has special needs and i can say it's never been pleasant, always seems like a lot of ar$e covering going on.

I am staggered also at the incompetence of the NHS for failing to perform a glucose test on your son then passing the blame onto you.

The best news is that your son is ok now, but refer the CPS to your recent GP visit and they should realise very quickly that you are not at fault here.

Good luck ;)

Rich, what a terrible experience and I'm just glad your son is OK.

Yes, you failed to diagnose Type 1 diabetes. So, I imagine, did almost everyone on this forum. I can't believe the medics are giving you a hard time on this, let alone that child protection services have become involved. Send them down to the GP and ask why the GP did not do a random blood glucose test based on the symptoms you reported? They are doctors. You are not. You are just a conscientious parent looking after your child. It's unbelievable, this culture of blame. Nothing bad is allowed to happen in our world without it being someone's fault. Good grief.

You have done nothing wrong. Best of luck for a speedy recovery for your son.

Glad your boy is recovering, this story is truly disgusting! I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, not being a parent myself but like has already been said if you've no knowledge of type 1 (and let's face it, who has? Unless you're already in the know of course) then you are not alone and did all you could do!

I was on holiday with aunties and uncles when I showed symptoms, excessive thirst mostly and obviously toilet every few mins, but I was always thin so nobody really took much notice, they just moaned at me for drinking all the squash... Long story short we don't have a good relationship with said aunties! I was on holiday like this for a week and it wasn't until I got home with my nan who at the time was a mental health nurse but had some knowledge of diabetes that she bundled me into the car and took me to musgrove hospital in Taunton!

not sure i handed the meeting with the SS in the best way. in the most astonished way possible i reply to them holy **** i have a medical degree **** iv been in the wrong job for years. i was not having the best of days at that point. i did say a bit politer that if i had failed to see it then so had the doctors school medical team (which he was under as we were looking at adhd which my other son has) and if that was the case then i would have to seek legal action against the doctors for mis diagnoses at this point i was very quickly told they would need to talk to there supervisor haven't seen them since that was about a week and a bit back now so fingers crossed.

Hopefully a good result there, fingers crossed.

It does help to polite and understanding of "why they've got to do what they do", while standing your ground, calmly.
