Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone else has serious problems with hiccups??? I get them so randomly and they'll sometimes last up to an hour. They often make me feel very sick and make it difficult to breathe.

The NHS suggests that there is a link between diabetes and hiccups but gives little explanation.

Any ideas as to why this happens and if there's anything that can be done about it???

Hope I'm not the only one!

Hey @jemmaedias sorry to hear that, sounds awful. Personally I have not come across is amongst type 1 diabetics, my step father (non diabetic) used to suffer a lot from hiccups so I am not so sure it's related, unless anyone else comes forth to prove it. He doesn't get them any more so guessing he finally grew out of them. Your GP should be able to offer some recommendations as to what could be done, maybe worth a visit to discuss as I am sure you would be keen to get rid of them :)

Not sure it's diabtes related, but about 15 years ago I developed hiccups that wouldn't stop and drove me to exhaustion and ended up going to my GP who prescribed pills that stopped it within a couple of days.

Hi @jemmaedias

When I used to get hiccups badly when I was younger (after 3 days solid without sleep I once ended up at A&E with exhaustion and a very sore chest), I found lying down with your legs raised at 90 degrees stopped them within minutes. Of course that's a bit difficult when out shopping etc, but where there's a will there's a way

I've not had them last any length of time since getting D, but then I'm a lot fitter now on LCHF than I have been so that may play a part?

The sure fire method for me is drinking out of the wrong side of a glass.
With a glass of water, lean forward so that your head is almost upside down & drink from the far side of the glass. Keep gulping it down for perhaps 30 seconds. Try again if necessary, though it usually works first time for me.
You may not want to do this in public as it's not the most dignified procedure!

Whenever I get hiccups, the only thing that ever works for me is to drink a dessert spoon of malt vinegar, stops the hiccups straight away... Tastes disgusting though! :-(

As a child my parents always told me to close my eyes, think of a grassy mound-like hill with a pure white horse on the very top. But the horse must have no tail. :hilarious: It must have concentrated my mind and the hiccups always stopped!
