High blood sugar

Thank you all for your replies and advice, I've started on my antibiotic this afternoon, blood sugar at lunchtime after 2 boiled eggs and a piece of wholemeal toast was 12.2. Had a very big almost carb free (but not fat free!) dinner tonight, tested after 2 hours and bloods are 8.6, I know that's still quite high but it's the first time they've been in single figures in 5 days. So I think the low carb is helping, and hopefully when the antibiotics kick in it'll improve more. I definitely want to speak to DN again to though as I just don't think the sitagliptin they have me on now is enough to manage this. I can't take Metformin but surely there's something else I can try.

I'm sure the DN will come up with some other alternatives should you need it, sounds like the low carb evening meal helped a lot :) single digits must be a huge relief.

If infection will keep fingers crossed antibiotics will clear that up too nicely don't hestitate to contact the gp if still not ok after treatment finishes. which one did they give prescribe anyway? presuming something relatively broadspectrum

Yes, it was a huge relief to see single digits after that meal, it was my test meal because any time I've had it my bloods have been really good, sometimes even decreasing from pre meal readings, so if it had still been very high I would have been really concerned. The antibiotics they've put me on are Trimethoprim, pharmacist says they are quite strong and fast acting so I'll see how it goes and if the readings are still too high next week it'll be an emergency GP appt. Thanks again for your replies. I'll keep you updated with how it goes.

Hi again everyone, I'm still experiencing high blood sugar levels, today I've had scrambled eggs with bacon and a slice of wholemeal toast for breakfast and blood sugar after 2 hours was 13.6, was the same yesterday. In the last week I've only had 2 readings under 10. I think I'll need to make an emergency GP appointment, I've finished my course of antibiotics now and it doesn't seem to have made any difference. I've been trying really hard with the low carb but it's not doing very much at all. I'm quite concerned with these readings now.

Sorry to hear that antibotics didn't seem to of made a difference sometimes (even with short courses of them) take a few days.

i'd bring along urine sample to gp when see if any sample bottles at home. or just drink something and provide sample whilst there may need to check with staff which colour lid should use.

drink plently sugar free fluids. stressing over readings wont be helping try relax. hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for your reply, I just tested again at 7pm, hadn't had anything else to eat since the bacon and eggs earlier (was talking to a friend on the phone for ages!), and realised I was feeling light headed. So I didn't eat for over 6 hours, reading was 7.5, big difference. So it would seem starvation is the solution.... Obviously I'm joking but ix that a good sign to that they have dropped to that level? I just don't know. I've eaten dinner now and feel a bit better, definitely need to speak to my DN I think.

I'm sorry to hear you're still struggling.
Many of us have the most issues dealing with carbs at our first meal and can handle a little more later in the day. Would it be an option for you to have more eggs and bacon (and maybe cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes added if you like them) and just skip the toast? Or use a low carb bread for toast?

A week ago you saw numbers as high as 17 so it looks like you're coming down. :)

'fraid I chuckled. I can be wicked at times.
I eat at 12 hourly intervals - though these days my breakfasts are rather small - today I ate an apple and some cheese, but then poured myself a jug of coffee and added cream so not really all that frugal.
My meals are nourishing and sustaining, but very low carb by comparison with the upper limit of 130 gm of carbs a day. I'm only eating apples because I have 6 buckets full, and the freezer stocked with them too. Once I was seeing under 8mmol/l after meals things got better for me, so perhaps that is a significant number. I definitely don't feel starved, and although I did have a few incidents of feeling lightheaded early on, now, at 9 years from diagnosis I am doing very well - better than a lot of people approaching the age of 75.
