High in morning

How did the 3am test go?

The BG you send her to bed on is entirely up to you. When my basal was correct (honeymoon means I'm tweaking again so it's even less) I was confident to go to bed at 6 as I knew i would wake up 5-7 which is in my target range. But that was due to fairly extensive overnight testing for my own peace of mind!

If she is in bed at say 8, you have to expect her to wake anywhere between 7 and 9 if her basal is correct. And annoyingly you don't know if it's correct without that grim overnight test

I agree with hale, the numbers are consistent so I wouldn't change it. If you've not been recommended it already, buy a copy of Gary Scheiner's Think Like a Pancreas. Every question (and more) that you could possibly ever have about insulin is in there, including basal dosing.

Gary says, that if before bed and before breakfast readings differ by more than 1.6 mmol/l, then adjust your basal by 10% accordingly.

And don't stress too much, as a general rule of thumb, aim not to go hypo and not go into double figures. Waking up at 8 mmol/l means you're doing well, in my opinion.

Hi, she went to bed at 7.30 bloods 9 @ 5 it was 8 and this morning @6.45 it was 6.8.
Ill have a look at that book on amazon for myself .nurse says I'm doing well but knowing more can only help things esp for if/when she gets pump January.
Her bloods seem ok threw the day hardly hypos just always high 2 hours after breakfast she on 1:9 at the min and 1:15 the rest of the day .think its just what she eats in mornings though

Think like a pancreas is fab!

That's actually a drop of 2.2 so I certainly wouldn't be increasing basal otherwise you could risk hypo overnight

I do also have a half unit pen for basal. I am currently on 2.5 units (pathetic isn't it!) and considering dropping even further to 2 units. I try to leave a week between basal changes so I know my overnight readings aren't a one off. Activity during the day can affect overnight levels so I like a bank of readings before making a decision

Spot on Hale, that's what I reckon too! Shell, one of the things a diabetes nurse told me regarding changing insulin doses is that once is a incident, twice is a coincidence and three times is a rule. In other words, if she goes high after breakfast (for example) three times in a row, then you should probably adjust the dose. The same rule can be applied to basal dosing.

Get a half unit basal pen.

I actually am a bit concerned with a drop of 2 overnight.... As a little different exercise or activity during the day could throw your child into a hypo during the night with dropping by 2ng points.

I personally would tryto get the night time pre bed level down a tad without a drop of 2 during the night. You couldachieve this with a 1/2 unit basal pen.

Would also say leave basal on those tests, the drop of 2 although yes its alot for basal to drop, there probably would of been qa still working slightly from tea time contributing. so worth noting if that was the case, what time she did have tea, as if tea was to be eaten later on a different day there would be more qa working before bed so should sugar levels be higher?/lower before bed you can give a snack if lower,or no snack if a tad high.

Ok I'll ask for a half dose pen also wen I touch her breakfast ratio she hypos before lunch even with a snack at lunch I've tried one weetabix this morn high GI with half a banana low GI it was 4mmol difference in 2 hours and back to normal level for lunch so I no ratios plush just the cereal she eats isn't too great . I'm going to check 3 o'clock again tonight she was 10 at half 7 but it said not to correct so will check bloods at 10.30 before I go bed and see how tonight goes.shes high as she's been gymnastics and ate extra carbs half way threw to keep her going

Hah, good thing you're buying and not selling then ;)

I learnt a lot from that book. Cleared up so many questions I had!

Lol that's true !
hopefully this book is what I need .sounds **** but diabetes is just taking over my life at the moment ,I think once i feel more clued up and feel I'm doing all i can ,i will be able to chill out a bit .

Sounds **** and is ****. I'm 9 months in now, doing everything "right" but so insulin sensitive I can barely walk down the street without a hypo! My honeymoon period has been extensive and is showing no signs of stopping. I wasn't particularly ill at diagnosis, but had experienced mild symptoms for 2 months so took myself off to the doctor. I've often wondered if I'm LADA rather than in a honeymoon, but I've realised it doesn't matter because I'm on insulin now anyway!

Have you heard of brittle diabetes ?my friends friend has that and just the wind change seems to make her hypo as well ! I was so upset at the prospect of the honeymoon period ending but I suppose does make diabetes a bit more predictable ?.i can't believe ur basal dose .i though it was based in weight and Chloe's like 3 stone and on 8 ! Not sure what LADA is? Do you have a good support network ?

Yeah my nurse would like me on 22 but that was just ridiculous. I started of on 4 units at diagnosis and have gradually been reducing ever since. I'm pretty active which keeps me on low doses too. I'm on a half to 9g for most meals too so it's not even like I'm compensating for the lack of basal with high doses at meals!

My hospital is fab, and 2 of my closest friends are a dietician who has worked at kids diabetes camps and a doctor. So I'm in good company. My cousin is also a T1 but she's poorly controlled, has been for 11 years. I've been helping her to get back on track, it's a slow road but she's getting there. I think she's glad to have a buddy to do it all with now!

Oh and LADA is essentially a slooooooow onset. Beta cells slowly die off rather than the rapid change for T1. Also known as T1.5

Yes definately good company ! Nice to have someone who knows how your feeling ,I'm sure your doing your cousin a world of good.
Wow you really are insulin sensitive !maybe it is LADA then ? Does it make no difference at all to treatment either way?
I hope Chloe never gets complacent with control when she's older, she trying it now, checked bloods At half ten which she had a good old whine about there 11!!will not correct she just wrapped herself tighter in her blanket and gone back to sleep .ill spend most night worrying now but hopefully they will start dropping soon
