Lately, I have noticed that when I fast, like from 8 pm to 8 pm first thing in the morning my Blood Glucose is around 5.6 but as the day goes on to say around 3 pm my Blood Glucose level has increased to 6.1, then when I eat say cheese lettuce cucumber and a couple of slices of ham, within two hours my levels go back down again? I thought fasting was supposed to be good. I have noticed this quite often now, even levels rising to 6.7 without eating, but go back down when I do eat. Any advice?

I'm under the impression that your body does produce higher glucose/sugar levels even tho you don't eat. I wasn't eating when I was in hospital and my levels were up in the 20s. But I thought it was just my medication.

I had this sometimes when fasting think it’s something to do with stress as my blood pressure went up too. I found it was more in the beginning and over time it normalised and now when I intermittent fast it goes down. Think there is something on diet dr site about it to do with adrenaline reaction ......maybe cutting food your body needs to be prepared to go out and hunt and you need blood glucose to do it! It’s worth it long term though well it was for me my hbac1 is 33 now you could try a bit of cream in your coffee or hot drink it may help and is acceptable on a fast if you need something.

I get increased blood sugar and ketones when ive tried consecutive days of 24 hr fasts, and they dont go down unless I return to a more normal regular pattern of eating, even then it takes over a week for them to go back to my normal BS pattern

How about do a log of everything your eating in a week

Possible liver dump.

Hi. Fasting can confuse the body and note that the liver does an overnight dump of glucose to get you going in the morning so best to ignore fasting blood sugar levels. Those levels are all good anyway.

I bet it is a liver dump - our livers don't like it when the glucose levels go lower than it expects so it dumps extra to keep you going until you next eat, and because you have insulin resistance, the insulin produced by the pancreas to keep these liver dumps in check doesn't work properly. Do you have anything at all during that 24 hours? Maybe a coffee with cream or a cup of tea with some milk might help.

I found this too. Then I found just a small bite of something was enough to elicit an insulin response and I wouldn’t rise. Like a small bite of cheese. Nothing that would raise bs but rather just enough to bring in a little insulin as we are at our lowest in the morning. Then we get the adrenaline cortisol rise. So maybe a few nuts would work too.

I eat the same thing and everything has been fine up until the past 3 days. I was doing housework for 2 hours, could this be the reason. I do notice that if I am active my BG levels go up even though I have not eaten. Not if I am sitting down. I usually take my blood when I have sat for a while not 10 mins after activity. I did notice this one time before. I had been doing housework for 4 hours non-stop without sitting and I took my bloods then and it was higher than usual, then I tested again 20 mins after sitting without eating and it went right back down again.

I have a couple of cups of coffee with very little milk and thats it. I quite often go hours without eating and everything has been ok. It is just these past three days, but I have been extra active. Like 2 hours of housework maybe more without sitting and then did some ironing for an hour. When I ate as I said it went back down within two hours.

I will either put cream in my coffee or take a dessert spoonful of cream and see what happens

I have macadamia nuts, will have some of them with a dessert spoon of cream tomorrow see what happens.

Just realised. I have not been sleeping to well for the past 3 nights, could this have an effect? Been sleeping for 3 to four hours tossing and turning in the night

I believe Dr Jason Fung said it would be normal for bg to go up when you start IF. You might want to read up on that though.

The activity would raise me especially if I didn’t have a small snack.
Somewhere along the line I realized that since our insulin levels are lowest in the morning, and then we get the adrenaline cortisol rise, if we eat a tiny bit it will bring in some insulin and I wouldn’t rise, sometimes slightly lower.
The coffee and cream or broth with butter might work too.

Lack of sleep can definitely cause higher bg. I've had insomnia in done form or another for quite a while now, and my bg levels have gone up considerably.

Ahhh maybe that is the reason then. It is unusual for me to move away from the 5s when I have not eaten, even when I have eaten my bloods are only around 6.0- 3 within two hours after eating

I think that you are right here. I have not been sleeping to well either for around 3 days and been going mad with the housework on an empty tummy. Usually, when I wake up my BL are about 5.3-5.7 after I have my evening meal they are around 6.4 or less and before bed can be 5.8ish

Just taken my blood glucose now and it's 5.2 so I am expecting it to be around 5.6 or less when I wake up later this morning
