Hot chocolate alternative when type 2

Usually come winter I would have the occasional hot chocolate (I don't like coffee and only drink decaf tea occasionally). I have been looking at what would be a good way of getting my fix without the sugar. Options hot chocolate is 5.7g a portion so definitely avoiding that. Cadbury highlights is 3g a portion so maybe.
I had a look at cocoa powder with skimmed milk and sweeteners and while the cocoa powder has almost no sugar, where do I stand with the natural sugar in the milk? It would be 10g a portion but not free sugar.
So is there a non dairy alternative, is the skimmed milk acceptable or just do the highlights even though will be free sugar?
All so confusing and would be a once a month thing anyway.
What do other people do to satisfy themselves?

I don't drink hot chocolate but had a quick Google. This recipe stands out head and shoulders above the rest - made with almond milk - nice for the winter months and might just give it a whirl myself.

That sounds good, another to add to my list thanks

Opt for unsweetened almond milk, a dash of cinnamon, and stevia in place of hot chocolate for a diabetes-friendly alternative.
I'm not a fan of cinnamon but I will mention it to my friend. She isn't diabetic but has so many allergies and loves cinnamon.

I ended up going for unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened cocoa powder and Stevia. Very similar to the flavour of regular hot chocolate.

Being told “Oh go on, one won’t hurt you!”.
Conversely, the food police.
Options Hot chocolate portion is huge - about 2.5 teaspoons. I drink it all the time, using only 1 heaped tsp, with 1 tsp of decaf coffee granules and a good glug of cream. My BG doesn’t budge.
I buy the tubs of Options, not the sachets. That way you can monitor how much you use.

I just checked my Options tub - the portion is “3 teaspoons = 11gms”. I think it’s actually 12.6 or thereabouts but you don’t need that much if you are adding cream and coffee. As stated above, I use one which is 4.2gms and I only have one mug a day.

Any of the above options, but with a tiny little splash of sugar free maple syrup in it. (I use Steeves Maple) So very, very good!

Another vote for cocoa, though it can be a pain mixing it. Have solved this problem by buying a 'frother', you can get one for just a little over £5. It's really worth it to give your drink a touch of luxury.
