I was diagnosed last July as being Diabetic type 2. Everything else I have learned from this website. However, I am Glucose Intolerant and wonder how this affects my muscles etc? I was at the gym last week and did a 40 minute work out on different machines by which time I was really sweaty and thirsty (not surprising really). But for all I drank etc, I felt so tired, I slept when I got home and also even after going to bed at 19:30 I was still in bed at 10 am the following morning. Although this is the first time it happened after a trip to the gym, this has happened a few times to me in the last few weeks and getting up so late, I really don't like sleeping in, I am use to getting up at 06:00 or 07:00. I don't know how the Glucose Intolerance will affect me while I am at the gym? Can anyone shed some light on this please?

Hi. First all diabetics are glucose intolerant. What was you last HBA1C, do you test your blood sugar regularly and what is your BMI? If you have insulin resistance due to excess weight then you may feel tired to start with at the gym until the weight starts to reduce. You may want to discuss medication options with the GP e.g. metformin? Can you give us more info

Good idea to have your Vitamin D levels checked - being low can affect muscle function. Getting my levels right made a big improvement to my tolerance for exercise.

I dunno about anyone else, but as a T1 if I am unfortunate to run high..? I feel it in my legs before anything else..

Hi Diabell, many thanks for your reply,

My last HbA1c reading was 48 and this was taken in November last year (2013). I don't take any meds and don't test my blood sugars, I control my diabetes through exercise and diet. Since being diagnosed I have lost 1.5 stones and I am ready to go to the gym 2 to 3 times a week. Trouble is if I'm sleeping all the time after I don't know what good it's doing me. I wasn't aware that all diabetics were glucose intolerant, this is something I have learned off you. I am still unsure about a lot of things, and I am waiting for my next appointment at my clinic which should have been last month, I was going to wait till they sent an appointment through the post but with this going on and having bouts of being extremely thirsty (again I don't know if this is due to the hot weather) I am going to phone up on Monday 23rd and make one myself if I can. To be honest I feel I am turning into a hypochondriac : (

Once again many thanks

hi sillygran

As you know, sleepiness and increased thirst could be symptoms of high blood sugar levels. Without a meter, you won't be able to rule this out. Perhaps there is something you are eating which is causing your levels to rise. If you post a typical days food here, we can have a look if you like.

Great. Today I have had 2 slices of toast for breakfast, and I had 2 quorn sausage sandwiches for dinner/tea. I usually eat toast for breakfast and I only eat Burgen bread. I usually eat quorn sausage but now and again I treat myself to a walls pork sausage (one only). Thinking about last Wednesday I don't remember eating anything that was high in carbs or anything sweet i.e. fruit. I didn't have a meal after getting in from the gym (approx 12:00 and I can't remember what I had after I looked after a little lad next door who I collect from school, I was in the house at about 16:30, and remember being so tired I went to sleep on the settee again, I probably ate something before I went to bed at 19:30 (I need to to take my pain killers for my back) but can't remember what it was. I think I need to keep a diary of what I am eating during the day and drinking (I drink Fennel tea) and then I can post something on here on Tuesday or Wednesday if that's ok.

Oh I like the sound of fennel tea!

Some people find they get on well with Burgen soya and linseed bread. Some people don't. Without testing, you won't know which camp you fall into. You have had 3 or 4 pieces of bread at 12 g carbs each. That would knock me out on the sofa lol, but we are all different so it is best to test. You are more likely to avoid medication if you can keep a tighter rein on your carbs.

I know I get fed up of eating toast, but don't know what else to have, I will have to have a look at the cook books again and look for something easy and tasty. I do like my mackerel and chicken but find if I eat these all the time, it becomes boring.

will do many thanks for you help

Hi do get a meter to check how your bloods are. You are not a hypochondriac trying to take care of your diabetes as it's something we all have to do. I have eggs and bacon for breakfast together with a small portion of home-made muesli

ohh eggs and bacon drooooool. I will start making my own muesli and a few other things at least I will try. I have tried to get a meter, and will ask again when I attend the next clinic.

Many thanks Daibell, for your advice and I will keep up to date with things if you don't mind.

Once again many thanks
