Bullies
I was diagnosed in 2002 then on insulin for first time for my first pregnancy in 2006. Off it immediately but 8yrs later I was having a bad time of denial and stopped metformin in fear of being able to fall pregnant again after a rough birth of child no.2 which was a pregnancy on metformin and seperate insulins but all other medications except insulin brought my glucose levels down. I was gaining huge weight too. Metformin kept 2st off me when it worked, then. So I was reintroduced to metformin once insulin stabilised my levels. I fought like mad to reduce insulin, lose weight and try to get onto tablets only, well only metformin worked without horrendous side effects. Only losing alot of weight with a bypass operation did I get off insulin. I'm still classed as obese but have damage to my back from moving house twice in a 6wk period and just after having a baby. All at the same time as my denial period which was understandable as I put my baby and son first then concentrated on my diabetes. I went to my new GP and said I normally see a specialist. He blood tested me and I got a quick referral to a fantastic endocrologist. He's in dubai working now. Humf!!

7 months from diagnosis to be on basal (probs needed it by 4-5 months but referrals take time) and 9 months to bolus being added :)

are they sure you are a type 2 diabetic?
I bought up testing DSN and she was like "I will bring it up with consultant, still hasn't"
Tempted to just go private if I can find a spare few hundred quid stuffed down the side of the sofa.:wideyed:
Unfortunately I check the T2 box with age and being overweight. Don't have t1 family history but do have autoimmune in the family (MS).

If you're in the UK and on insulin then you get significantly better NHS tech if you are T1. In your position, I'd keep pushing for those tests.

It was around 5 years after diagnosis which was clearly too long as due to poor control in that time I now have numerous other issues

I've been on insulin from the first day I was diagnosed and that's been 4 years. Apart from a brief time I was off it completely.

How did they confirm it was type 2 not some other version? Late 30‘s is certainly possible for type 2 but less common. Did they test you for antibodies and cpeptide? Why did they never try any other treatment?

I was 38 when I was first diagnosed. I was rushed into hospital with DKA because my sugars were dangerously high and they did do an antibody test and confirmed it was type 2 but im not convinced im type 2, never have been.Ps: I was tried on a medication and I took an allergic reaction to it so I went on Metformin and have been on it ever since and also Lantus.

They did tell you a negative antibody test (and there are lots of them not just one) isn’t absolute for dismissing type 1 didn’t they? Did they not do a c peptide to see what your insulin production is like? You could ask for one now. If you are in fact you are type 1 that would give you nhs access to tech that a type 2 doesn’t have (cgm, pumps etc) and a consultant I believe.

Diagnosed 23 years ago. Went on insulin during pregnancy 15 years later. Went off afterward and am still not requiring it. Until recenty, I was diet and exercise only, but earier this year I started to take herbs to make my blood sugar more responsive to my efforts.
