How long are you supposed to leave it between injecting Novorapid? Thanks x

5 hours seems a bit extreme to me. I was told that it's action is mostly done in 2 hours, probably less than 20% left by three hours.

You do need to avoid stacking multiple doses though, but by your rule, if I have a lazy morning and don't finish breakfast before 7, then I need to delay my habitual 12 o'clock lunch. What do you do if you like a sunday lie-in?

Well I would have that inbetween break shorter than 5 hours then. Im not that rigorous
I think though that 5h works the best. Two hours after meal your levels should be around 8 so lets say your levels are right (about 5 or 6) three or more hours after having meal. If I have meals every 3 hours my levels will never stay within normal range for a longer period of time.

Thank you for your replies. I honestly can't remember how long I've been on these two insulins, pre children I think and so I was wondering if the times had changed. I was told four hours strictly but that could have been for the insulin before this.
Thanks again x

I also use 4 hours as a general rule.

However, if I am going to snack before that (we all know it happens sometimes!) I calculate the insulin, then knock either 1 unit or 0.5 a unit off since I already have insulin on board. Seems to keep stacking at bay!

Tricky question to answer. If you gave yourself the right amount of Novorapid then the 2 hour reading should be consistent with the pre-meal reading. If your basal is correct then your 2 hour reading and the next pre-meal reading should be consistent too. In my case, my numbers are fairly consistent so know that I can give myself extra Novorapid 2 hours after the previous injection. I had to give myself a single unit at my 2 hours post-breakfast reading as I was at 8.7 mmol/l. Before lunch I was at 6.3.

If I have a lot of protein, I know that I'll need Novorapid 2 hours after my meal, so give myself some more then.

I was advised to leave 4-5 hours between Novo injections and that's what I do unless split dosing for a highish fat meal, I'm sure by the 2 hour mark 70% of the insulin is used up and the remainder is exhausted over the following 2-3 hours.

Thank you for all the replies. I'm confused about split dosing either for high fat or starters etc
I've never heard of that before. Do you literally do a small amount of insulin and then the rest after? I'm doing a carb counting course in about three weeks so hope to learn a bit more then. X

Between breakfast and lunch for me is 4 hours then between lunch and dinner it is up to 7

If my reading after 2 hours is 8, I'm pretty pi$$ed off to be honest. I've had two readings > 8 in the last week, one of those was a post hypo spike, don't know about the other one. I'm typically seeing a BG rise of less than 2.0 2 hours post meal.

Personally I would not normally be eating again within 3 hour of the last meal, but I've been at an airport before, with the choice of eat before my flight or not eat. It's been about 4 hours after my last meal, adn I tested and ate, dosing appropriately for the meal but with no adjustment for current BG reading
