Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with diabetes (suspected type 2) on 1st November. My fasting glucose result was 18 (although was suspected to have been higher on the weeks before) and hba1c was 103.

I am on 2x metformin a day and have changed my diet to cut the carbs and sugar. This has caused me to lose quite a bit of weight (approx 9lbs in 3 weeks and I was thin to start off with! But hey you got to have some positives to this horrible illness right?! )

My bloods now go between 7-11 which I know is still too high and I wondered how long it took others to reduce their bloods to ‘normal’ levels?

I know it’s only been a month but I wanted to have things more under control by now ...

They are always a lot higher in the morning compared to the evening.

122 to 35 in 4/5 months in my case, but I did sort of dive into it head first 20g carbs per day.

If you need to maintain your weight, look to increase your fats and protein.

I managed it in about 6 months eating 50 gm of carbs from low carb foods each day.
To maintain weight you'd need to increase your protein and fats so compensate.
Once your metabolism starts to recover you might well see levels dropping without any further changes, as it is no longer being hammered by incoming carbs all the time.

I was diagnosed with diabetes (suspected type 2) on 1st November.
So have they done any tests to confirm this? There's a big difference between not producing enough insulin and not processing carbs properly, even if the initial symptoms are the same...

Hi, it hasn’t yet been confirmed but they are ‘assuming’ it’s type 2 at the moment. I have my first diabetic nurse appointment next week since the diagnosis of the diabetes so will see what they have to say!

Thanks, it’s good to hear people have managed to get it down! It’s a nice bit of encouragement!

As @EllieM says, you need your diagnosis before you do anything drastic. I don't know anything about T1, but there is also T1 LADA.

Took me just about 3 months...HbA1c from 11% to 5.5%.

Carbs lite, fats friendly. Intermittent fasting (skip 2-3 consecutive dinner). No exercise. ie < 10,000 steps a day of activity.

It took me 2 months after stopping statins and gradually reduced to between 34 and 37 for the last 4 years

I had a year of struggling to reach normal levels. Thanks entirely to government misinformation and industry misdirection. Then I discovered dietary ketosis. My numbers plummeted and I was off my meds in about six months. Then I found this place. Shame it wasn’t the other way around but there you have it :D
