Hi type 2 newbie
I personally have never liked potatos ,Chips,Pasta etc.
After reading some posts on this section i have realised that i have been eating the wrong diet for me that included carbo's by my DBN. I am fuming :evil: :evil: :evil: . That i have eating these for 1 month when i did'nt need to (i honestly hate pasta, Potatoes etc. ) Over the next four weeks i shall cut these out and be happy to .

Any ideas for the altered diet would be very welcome!

Go on to the Low Carb Diet forum on here, and in the search box type 'Viv's Diet'. It was the very first thread on that post, so it will be right at the very bottom of all the pages.

It's the diet I use, based on the Atkins diet, and gives you no more than 25 grams of carb per day if you follow it exactly. You can eat as much as you like of the foods listed unless it says otherwise.

The only warning is - it contains quite a lot of fat, and not everyone can tolerate that much. But it will not harm your cholesterol levels at all, so don't worry about that. Your blood pressure will improve, too, and you'll lose weight if you need to. If you don't, add more carbs.

You may anyway find you want to eat more carbs than the 25g the diet allows you. That's easy, just add in more 'good' carbs (eg low glycaemic index), testing all the time to see what they do to you.

Whether you follow it or not, it will give you some idea of what a low-carb diet involves, and many of the foods you can eat. The good thing about it is that you don't need to count anything, unless you add in extra carbs. Don't worry about calories either!

When first diagnosed I cut out bread, pasta,rice and potatoes/starchy veg. totally. I just ate protein-meat and fish-and salad and vegetables. After about 6 months I drop in half a slice of bread here and there or a potato or a little basmati rice. Otherwise I just eat what I always ate, fresh food, cooked with spices and herbs. I've lost loads of weight, feel fine and have no T2 symptoms so far. I don't add fat but have it occasionally if I need extra energy or just fancy a treat ( bananas in cream or chocolate mousse are 2 favourites ). I know I'm lucky at the moment but live by the rule KISS - keep it simple sweetheart :D

I can't see any reason thyat i can't follow your advice .When i met my wife 10yrs ago she was puzzled to my none eating of potato's and total lack of eating pasta. I have spent most of that time relatively carb free ( apart from rice once a week ) I am so pleased for a different prospect that i can (forgive the term ) Dump them :D
Once again i thank you for your wisdom and i shall keep you posted :D

Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
If you wish to continue to eat rice once a week make sure it is basmati rice and that you only eat a small portion, what you could hold in your hand. I am able to eat 2 tbsp of basmati rice but you will need to test to see if you can manage the same/more/less so test test test :D

Basmati rice is a highly complex carbohydrate that the human body has great difficulty breaking down, the same is NOT true of wholegrain, brown, American long grain rice etc just basmati :D

Basmati rice was a bit of a shock to me - I honestly thought it was a typo on the Nutritional Info on the box. Like Sid said - it's much lower in carbs than all other rices, and if I do treat myself to Rice, it's always plain boiled Basmati.

I LOVE rice. It's easier for me to avoid it completely, than it is to limit my consumption to small amounts. I'll treat my self ocassionaly to a portion of rice - but in the knowledge that it WILL raise my BG. Bit of a guilty pleasure.

Special treat. <1 a month.

God, I miss rice! :(

The only way your really going to know what effects you is by testing. Test before your meal and then 2hrs after and see if your levels have gone back to be the same as the pre meal ones. I kept a food diary for 2 weeks and tested like this to see what i could tolerate.
The only bread for example i can eat is Burgen and then only a slice. I can manage a small amount of pasta or a few new spuds or small amount of basmati rice though.

It's the amount of amylose(one of the types of starch) which makes the glycemic index of Basmati rice on the low side. Other rices like Jasmine and risotto rices contain high amounts of a more easily broken down starch. (amylopectin)
There are types that have a higher amylose content and consequently lower GIs than Basmati.
One of these is an Australian rice called Doongara, you may be able to buy it in one of the Aussie shops. There are also several varieties of Bangladeshi rice which, are available in Indian grocery shops. ( the types tested for the GI index are BR16, BR4 and IR 42, but I haven't the faintest idea whether they will be labelled as such.)
Any rice will be much higher GI if you cook it for a long time. (basically the cooking process starts to break down the starch so making it more easily digested and absorbed)
The brown (wholegrain) versions aren't much lower in GI but they are better for you as the stripping and polishing processes removes much of the vitamin, mineral, oil and fibre content

Wow
you guys really know your carbs. Is there an alternative that would be an all rounder replacement?
My wife makes homemade soup 3 x veg stock cubes,carrots,Onions,half a cup of swede,3x 1 spagheti lengths snapped up into 1" strands .half a dozen pasta shells,tinned tomatoes.
Could this soup be adapted to a non carb meal :?:

Phoenix - tell me more about these rices, sounds v. interesting.

JUSTFOCUS - I'd replace the spagetti and pasta shells with "Nudies" (google for th erecipe, or PM me). These are little balls made from ricotta, parmigiano and egg, and are used in place of pasta in some Italian dishes.

They could even be shaped into shells by denting them with your thumb...

One of the recipes I found online includse spinach IN the nudies. Just blitz the cheese and egg in a blender with some spinach, then form and cook normally.

well I tried googling nudies - ooops- it was not a recipe I got! Then I remembered to add recipe to the search, much better.................

I was given the standard NHS diet sheet and told to eat some carbs with every meal. After just a week of testing I realised that pasta and potatoes really make my blood sugars shoot up. :?

This week I'm low carb and low fat ( I have a heart problem) and I feel soooooooooooooo much better :D I feel more awake and also have more energy. Better still my jeans are looser and the scales have started moving downwards for the first time in 20 years :D

Luckily I've had no cravings or hunger since changing my diet - just shows how much "spare" I was eating each day.

Hope I can get a tighter grip on my sugar levels an avoid the post meal highs.
