If you could reverse your diabetes by giving up processed/preserved food, would you?

I've actually just had a Sainsburys Spinach and Ricotta Pizza and I smothered it in Jalapeños. Haven't had a pizza in ages and I absolutely loved it !

Everything is about moderation, common sense and knowing your own diabetes regardless of type.

I have been sticking needles in all parts of my body for well over 33 years and up to as yet I haven't gone blind, lost any limbs, haven't had any kidney or heart failure and I have worked all my life since the age of 16 and I'm now 47.

I am a human being first and foremost and second to that I also have diabetes.

I respect my diabetes (you have to with any chronic illness) and in return I treat myself every now and then. I will eat processed foods and the odd cream cake in moderation because it's good for me mentally !

Once I get to the stage where I go into a panic attack because I'm thinking about having half a twix the illness has won.

Common sense, moderation and non obsession are my keys !

And the odd chocolate éclair :)

As @Heathenlass said complications come from long term high BS levels. The odd dairylea triangle will not contribute to this.

Well I hope not !

Love this post.

The apple in my avatar is NOT the enemy. It's one of the most perfect foods on the planet if 1) eaten in moderation and 2) not GMO!!!!! I save fruit for my hypos. I don't eat candy or crackers or glucose tabs. No matter how low I go, I always treat a hypo with fresh fruit, not even juice! A good fruit for a bad hypo is an orange or a banana. Those hit you fast! I wouldn't eat an apple during a hypo, the fiber will slow it down; but in a pinch, I'd say even an apple is better than a candy bar! You don't want to risk giving yourself possible diabetes related complications from candy and crackers down the line, even when you have to save your life in the moment!!!!! :-)

Disagree with an apple or fruit for a hypo.
Eating an apple or fruit quickly is not possible in some situations. Why do you think there are itsms such as the glucagon injection and glucogel on prescription? Because they are the life savers for when people cannot eat.....least of all save their lives themselves by eating fruit....

Cheese is your friend, @kevinfitzgerald ! :D And it's a food that has been processed for centuries in many cultures ;)

Have I mentioned how much I love your avatar, BTW ? :D

If I had treated some of my bad hypos with an orange or other fruit, I'd have probably have been unconscious before I'd finished it. I treat my hypos with dextrose tablets or Lucozade. The latter works faster for me, maybe because it's liquid.

I don't eat much processed food at all, mainly because I don't like the taste, but I don't think the odd processed meal will hurt me.

As for GMOs, again I try to avoid them. But not all genetically engineered things are necessarily bad, eg human insulin.

I try to live as healthily as I can, but not get obsessed about it.

Hi @Lana F , speaking as a type 2 I find the question of your thread rather odd,

'If you could reverse your diabetes by giving up processed/preserved food, would you?'

I
personally think this is a 'no brainer' but people need educating what are processed foods and what are not, we process natural foods in the kitchen any way.

Not all processed foods are bad. Also Preserved foods, many dried foods are perfectly OK

We have been processing foods by drying and salting for thousands of years which are perfectly OK like dried & salted Fish

As for your perfect fruit for a diabetic the apple try being a type 2 and eat a whole apple, eating fruit got me for Pre
Diabetes to full Diabetes in 6 months! :(

I have no issue with many processed foods, but as a type 2 diabetic I do have issues with any kinds of food (processed or otherwise) containing high quantities of sugars and starches, and apples are not generally on my "want to eat regularly". list. So NO I would not give up processed, etc, food because doing so wouldn't reverse my diabetes, but I have willingly given up the high carbohydrate foods that my diabetic body doesn't tolerate.
