I was diagnosed with a blood sugar of 55 4 months ago can anyone tell me what it has done to my body i have neuropathy i have got it down a lot usually around the 10 mark sometimes 7 lots of hard work with food and most people dont understand and think you can get rid of it just like a cold but i have been on a desmond session and was told you can never get rid of it because once you get it and your pancreas doent produce enough insulin that cant be reversed i am not overweifgt i was very active and it annoys me reading articles in the paper saying it is a lifestyle problem not a disease i am t2 and 61 not history in the famioly no one can tell me how i got it

There are many people who have got rid of their diabetes and even come off the register . If we have it in our minds we will never be cured we will never get better .

It can be processed foods that cause type 2 .

Hello @red1mot - there are some people who will tell you how you got diabetes - whether you want them to or not, and it will be your fault, they are quite certain.
I am lucky in that, although I am really sensitive to carbs I have known that for years and so had already got lots of experience eating low carb. When diagnosed I just reverted to what I knew, and liked and now I have got normal blood glucose almost all the time, and my sensitivity to insulin is returning to some extent - so I can eat more carbs and not see sky high readings, but only in moderation, and only once in a while. It might get better, but I really can live with going on this way for the rest of my life if that is what it takes to stay healthy.
There is some advice about limiting protein as it turns into carbs - but if it is a choice between - for instance, cucumber and roast chicken as a source of carbohydrates for the day I will not be sniffing the sweet smell of cucumber.....

Hello and welcome to the Forum :) Here is the Basic Information we give to new members and I hope you will all benefit from it. Ask questions when you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 235,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:
  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

I got my HbA1c copy this morning I don't understand it at all .
It says HbA1c levl-IFCC standardised-KAC2366) 86 mmo/mol 23.00-41. 00mmol/mol

cholesterol is 7 nothing about offering statins . Although my GP does know I have a phobia about taking meds lol .

Can anyone explain my HbA1c as at the bottom of the form it says .
Results between 42-47 mmol/mol indicate ahigh risk for the progeression to tyep 2 DM (NICE pHG 38 July 2012 ).

It means your HbA1c is 86mmol/mol, and the standard range is 23 to 41mmol/mol.

The other bits refer to the type of HbA1c test, which is the standardised one.

How about the note at the bottom where it says this . Results between 42-47 mmol/mol indicate a high risk for the progeression to tyep 2 DM (NICE pHG 38 July 2012 ).
Because mine is 41 ?

thanks

According to what you quoted from your copy, your HbA1c isn't 41, it is 86.
If that is the case, you are well and truly diabetic.

It says HbA1c levl-IFCC standardised-KAC2366) 86 mmo/mol

The note at the bottom is just telling you that between 42 and 47 is a high risk for progression to type 2 diabetes.

in this sceme you can see the first 4-5 green squares they are int non diabetic area , the next yellow ones are prediabtic the red and orange are in the too high diabetic levels... where you seem to be at the moment, if you want to get control then start counting the numberof grams of carbs you eat on a day and start under 100 grams and see if your numbers get low enough, or go lower .. try for a week first...

I'm doing low carb , I'm finding it hard to know what to eat though because we're on a budget and can't buy a lot of special foods.

Is there a low carb pasta because i love that lol

Did you take statins to lower your cholesterol because i know mine will come back over 6 as it was 6.1 fifteen years ago but i won't take statins I've seen the damage they did to my dad .

there is a low carb pasta made of Shirataki , and it actually tastes rather fine/neutral fine in spiced cooking

Hi @brend and welcome to the forum.
It is true that once you get a HbA1c of 48 or over you are T2 diabetic, and will always have to control that condition, by diet and/or medication.
But it is possible to bring your blood sugars down to below diabetic levels. I and many others on here have done this by adopting a Low Carbohydrate High Fat (LCHF) approach to eating.
Have a read round the threads to see how this works and ask any questions you want to. The people on here are friendly and supportive.

Have you decided how to tackle your diabetes yet?
Low carb high fat , tons of exercise . I am going through menopause so doc said I need more carbs but to keep them under 200 a day and I'm doing great I've lost a stone and my blood pressure is down from 144 to 138 in just a few weeks :)

Did the doc explain why going through menopause means you need more carbs? I've never heard that before. I have heard that we become more insulin resistant at menopause, and that very low carb (keto) eating mitigates the unpleasant symptoms associated with it.

Ive been on here for over a year when my husband was diagnosed type 2 .
I went to the doctors last Wednesday as i just felt run down and I know its gross but i had a boil that wouldn't clear up , I had a urine sample taken and it confirmed glucose then i had a finger prick test and that was 12.8 . My doctor had a blood test done and sent it off that day , he called me at 6 that evening and said that i am diabetic and it is early stage as i have regular testing .
I've had more blood work done for the cholesterol kidney and HC 1 whatever its called and waiting for that to come back .
As some of you may know from a previous thread my husband didn't want to have the retinal screening at the NHS centre and opted for the opticians test , we now know that the camera our opticians uses is exactly the same and has the same technology , I suffer from panic and anxiety disorder and told my doctor i won't be going to NHS screening but will go to the optician i use as it is the same camera and he said that is fine i don't want you to panic .

I received an appointment for the NHS screening eye test yesterday but i will write and let them know I am using my own opticians .

My doctor is confident I can cure this by losing weight and yes he did say (cure) and said my diabetes is only mild , I know many frown upon the word (cure) and (mild) but I'm confident my doctor knows what he is talking about , I am on a diet lowering my calories and carbs and since last Wednesday i have lost 9lbs . It's probably more than that now but I won't weigh myself until next Monday now .

I need to lose 4-5 stones and I hope to keep it off .
Being diagnosed with diabetes somehow changes your way of thinking you have a reason for eating differently and it is something that isn't there when you are not diabetic its like you have a determination to help yourself and rid yourself of this condition .

I know there are many on here that say there is no cure for diabetes - but I am believing that i can do this and believe i will be cured , I also know that many say we just reverse the symptoms but I know of people who are taken off the diabetic register which to me means they no longer have diabetes . I want to be one of those people i want to be taken off the diabetic register .

I know this won't be easy but I want to turn this around .
