Insulin

I was recently told by my diabetic consultant that using insulin also increases hunger, which isnt good when your trying to lose weight!!

Yes it does, I've discussed it with my diabetic consultant as I said I wanted to lose weight but felt hungry all the time and she said it can make you feel hungry. I have heard this before she told me.

It's so hard losing weight with diabetes, I've had type 1 since I was 2 I'm now 27 and just given birth to my second daughter, so trying hard to shift the extra baby weight I've gained during pregnancy and its such a battle to do!!!!

Hi just a quick question for anyone does insulin put weight on you, as I have up to 4 or more injections a day???

Not if you match your insulin to your food and watch the calories you are eating, I managed to lose over 4 stones whilst on insulin and after 12 months was able to stop the insulin treatment. Obviously thats not possible for a T1 but loosing weight is providing you dont over eat.

To lose weight you need to eat less, fewer calories, and if you eat fewer carbs you will require less insulin. Tight control and a strict diet worked well for me :)

Wish that would happen to me, I've been on insulin quite a few years and have always been hungry!

Unfortunately it all boils down to what insulin does......

Insulin helps turn the carbs that you eat into the essential nutrients and proteins that your body requires..... it assists these to move into the bodies cells which in turn do what they do and you put on weight.

If you do not have enough insulin or none at all your body cannot utilise these nutrients and turns to the only other source available - body fat. During the breakdown of body fat (incorrectly) you develop an acid by product and you would become Ketoacidotic - very dangerous and very very lethal.

Thats why many teenage girls and some guys stop taking insulin and end up in hospital seriously ill. During my nursing career I have witnessed this often and unfortunately have seen the dire consequences.

My advice would be to discuss it with your diabetes team and try to find the balance - it will take time but you will get there.
:D
