I do not have diabetes
My partner got following note from diabetic nurse yesterday when he went to appointment...

10g = 2mmols
i unit insulin = (downward arrow) 2-3 mmols
Carbs & Cals book

(note: the equal signs were 'approximately equals' but can't find that symbol on my keyboard)

Any idea what this means....

Had already asked a number of questions about how things went so didn't ask about above.....he was starting to get irritable about my questioning.......chances are he won't remember anyway...
Assume it relates to some sort of carb counting which is something he has never done before.

Also last night he had a low reading of 4.7 pre dinner (salmon and salad) but still injected his usual 28 units of Novomix 30...he didn't check bs levels later or before bed....on the basis of the above, should he have reduced amount of insulin taken particularly as dinner was low carb content...

Hi Molly,

It looks like advice on insulin dosages/carbs/blood sugars and also for correction doses. Carbs and Cals is a book which the DSN is presumably recommending to him to buy.

I'd get him to phone the DSN just to double check the insulin amounts and guidance given there as it's obviously very important he gets it right. I wouldn't start adjusting insulin until I was totally sure what my DSN meant.

Was he given information about carb counting?

I'd say the note is saying 10g of carbs will raise his BS 2mmols, 1 unit of insulin would bring his BS down 2-3mmols and to get the carbs&cals book.

When bg is lower than ideal, then using twice daily, eat 10g carb more in meal to raise bg from 4mmol to 6mmol. Regarding bg being higher than ideal, then eat 10g carb less in meal to make bg drop by 2mmol. So bg test is first priority and decide from bg reading how much to increase or decrease the carb.
