Hope that doc was an endocrinologist. If not, ask for a referral to one.

If you still think you have an UTI, have you seen a gynecologist or urologist and had a urine test?
Ask doc for a copy of your lab tests. Hope that was extended release Metformin and that you also have an Rx for a meter, test strips, and lancets for testing 5-8 times a day. You've come to the right place for discussing it all and learning how to go low carb high fat

It was a nurse. I ditched the pills and went straight to a LCHF diet and got myself a lancet. Have brought my sugars down significantly. So grateful I found this group!

So that's the interogation over. Do we get marks or is it just a pass/fail thing? Anyway, a year or so ago my doctor advised me that I was slightly over the line for type 2 and put me on Metformin (500mg twice a day) and statins, largely because I am slightly overweight (only about 4-5 stones) and employ staff to take my exercise for me. A couple of weeks ago I had a review and the stats had gone mad, so I was given a testing kit. That gave me some data to p;lay with, and like all engineers I just love playing with data, so out came the spreadsheet...

blood sugar.png
This showed I was way over the limits, averaging about 14mmol/l for the first few days. The chart above shows my learning journey. The early peaks included discoveries like the evils of watermelon (a hazardous substance which should require a prescription) and the way that bread is mostly carbs, so lunchtime sandwich or baggette is a stupid idea! Then couscous, then pasta (even wholemeal pasta) etc etc - I'm sure you've all been there. Last weekend I discovered the Lidl "Low GI Loaf" and had salad sandwiches for lunch. That's when I discovered that Lidl "Low GI Loaf" is just as carb-loaded as a brace of croissants, so that's now on the banned list as well.

The chart is interesting. Most of the peaks an troughs I can account for through food errors or bouts of exercise, and you can see that there is a general downward trend (helped a little by the doctor adding Gliclazide from lunchtime last saturday) but there are underlying themes that I struggle with. Like why it is that the level sometimes goes up while I sleep, but other times it goes down. Or why I can eat an evening meal followed by a 2 mile brisk walk on one day and see the net level drop and stay down, but precisely the same meal and walk the next day will see a peak before the fall. So any advice/poiters here would help!

Anyway, that's more than enough blather from me for now...

Or why I can eat an evening meal followed by a 2 mile brisk walk on one day and see the net level drop and stay down, but precisely the same meal and walk the next day will see a peak before the fall. So any advice/poiters here would help!

Anyway, that's more than enough blather from me for now...

Great post! Yes, engineers are a breed apart (was married to one (aeronautical), father was one, friends are, relatives are/were, family friends are/were) and need special understanding ;) Advice and pointers? Well, as far as I can see you're doing fine (it might be worth posting the latter part of your post in the Greetings and Introductions as a stand-alone thread to get more help); as long as your staff keep up the exercise regime.....

Hi all,

I was diagnosed diabetic over 10 years ago and never really been managing it well, first by diet, then tablets for about the last three years. Although I was seeing the GP diabetic nurse all through this time. A couple of weeks ago I was taken as an emergency admittance into A&E by ambulance as I had diarrhoea for over 7 weeks and slowly not eating much until almost nothing at all over that time, still taking my diabetic tablets. I had become more and more sleepy, no energy at all to do anything even watch TV and on the day of admittance I had began vomiting.

It turns out I seem to have a bowel problem which is still under investigation but I had gone into ketoacidosis with acute kidney injury. They threw everything at me in A&E and within 4 hours I had been transferred to ICU, I was there for 2 days and then a further 6 days on a ward. Quite scary, and now I am on insulin Novarapid 3 x daily and Lantus 1 x daily.

So now, I am slowly getting to grips with administering insulin and the diet (low carb) willl come next.

I am a almost 57 year old lady, married with two grown up children and a granddaughter - plus a dog :)

I live in the Wigan/Warrington area, North West England.

I am an administrator but haven't been in work for over 7 weeks!

I have an appointment with the hospital diabetic team in a couple of weeks and will have questions to put to them regarding my diabetic status - am I type 1 or Type 2 after this incident, what status is my pancreas/kidneys etc?

I have lurked around this site for some time but, of course, paid it much more attention over the last week. It looks very supportive and very informative and I look forward to finding out more over time.

Thanks,

Ann

Hi Ann,
Very rare to get ketoacidsosis with type two, they should do tests to check if your type one like GAD antibodies.
Hope your feeling better now.
Take care

Yes, I realise that after reading it up on here and google search. I met with the hospital diabetic nurse and she is adamant I'm still type 2, I'm not totally convinced. She said that she had been a specialist in diabetes for many years now and even the doctors can say it is type 1 when really it is type 2 - she takes all the elements into consideration such as length of time since being diagnosed, weight, age etc and she considers I am type 2. She didn't seem to give the seriousness of the DKA much weight and that it was just my diarrhoea and not eating that had caused it.

She advised that it can be a slow process but eventually the tablets stop working and you have to take insulin - but the tablets have never really worked with me over the last 3 - 4 years, from metformin - Gliclazide - Glibenclamide - Sitagliptin - Pioglitazone and Canagliflozin (although I didn't take this very long before I was ill).

I thought they could only dot the GAD test before you take insulin and not after - is that not correct? if this is incorrect I will ask for the test.

Others opinions welcome :)

BTW I am coping with the insulin on a routine day at home but struggle just a little when away from home or when I go to work, just got to get used to it, early days yet. My glucose levels are evening out but still a little higher first and last thing, but still in contact with diabetic team to adjust insulin doses,

Best wishes,

Ann

Hey all! I’m not quite sure how to include a picture of me on here (using iOS) so I’m sorry you won’t see me just yet hahah.

My name is Christopher Vega and I just turned 22 midway through April! I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was just 15 months old. I’ve almost had it for 21 years and that’s such a crazy concept for me to grasp. I’ve had a handful of complications come from my lovely disease but I guess you could look at it in a brighter light and say it’s what makes me who I am today!

-I am a male!
-I am from the United States!
-I’m currently living in Lawrence, Kansas!
-I’m an Atheist.
-Caring. Empathetic. Selfless.
-I have so many pets! My family has three dogs, my older sister has 2 or 3 dogs with a bearded dragon, and I have a bearded dragon and a cat!
-I’m definitely a windows kind-of-guy when it comes to computers but I side with Apple for their iPhones because I don’t care for highly modifiable phones.
-I like Hockey but I’ve never played and I don’t really know anything about the actual sport haha.
-Emotions are very weird for me; Anger is something I rarely will display to other people. I usually internalize it.
-Sadly no I do not have any tattoos or piercings. But I plan on getting a Star Wars themed tattoo in the near future!
-My favorite musicians are Led Zeppelin, His Infernal Majesty (H.I.M.), Dion & The Belmonts, All That Remains, and The Killers!!
-I’ve always loved Classic Rock but for the last year or so I’ve fallen in love with music from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. Genre’s like Doo-Wop and Jazz!
-My favorite flag would either be the Spanish flag or Finnish flag!
-I absolutely love camping! It’s one of my favorite things to do!
-I’ve been in love for the last 4 years (this July) with the same girl who I plan to marry one day:)
-I tan pretty easily so fake tanning was never going to be needed.
-I’ve only visited Mexico, Jamaica, and I think that’s it! But hopefully more to come!
-My favorite city has to be Helsinki, Finland!
-Well, I don’t actually watch tv; at least not cable. I’ve been watching Friends, Glee, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Black Mirror, and South Park on Netflix and Hulu!
-My favorite movies in order probably are Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Iron Man, Avenger’s Infinity War, and Dracula Untold!
-I’m a college student; far from wealthy haha.
-I don’t work but I am a student attending The University of Kansas!
-My major as of right now is in biology and it’s Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Organismal Biology!
-One of the things I’ve always admired (I guess that’d be the best word choice?) about myself is my overwhelming desire to help others no matter what. It’s benefitted me in my life but it has also negatively affected my health and mindset over the years. Aside from that, I also love how naturally polite I am hahah.
-What I absolutely despise about myself is my health and past decisions in life. This includes my Diabetes, complications from Diabetes, mental disorders, drug addictions, how I’ve affected my family and what I’ve put them through, and overall just the terrible person I was to those closest to me for all of my middle school and high school life.

If anybody here was diagnosed as early as I was, PLEASE contact me! I’ve never met anyone who has had it for the entirety of their life like I have! I’d love to meet someone who gets my struggles hahahah.
