Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum but not to diabetes, new to it just 59 years ago. Born in 1952 and been insulin dependant nearly all of my life.
I live in greater Belfast, Northern Ireland.
I have done the DAFNE course last year and recently started on the ACCU- CHEK combo pump. What a difference to life in general.
I also have COELIAC disease, high blood pressure and a few other minor problems, awaiting a replacement shoulder and a new aortic valve for heart.
The DSNs in Belfast are excellent and talk with you rather than at you.
Anyone else have or had any of the above problems. I would like to hear from you.
Last HBaiC 7.4
Aprida insulin last 2 months.
Billy J.

Hi, I'm Kate, female, 65 years old, born in Kent now living in Essex, UK. I was diagnosed T2 about 12 years ago and manage to keep my BS levels reasonably good with the help of Gliclazide and Metformin. I also have high blood pressure and cholesterol also under control with medication. I am overweight but am addressing that although I find exercise difficult as I have some neurological condition which makes my legs and hands weak. Doctor can't tell me what it is and won't let me be referred to a specialist. I have been married to Charles for 32 years and we have twin sons of 31, one married and the other still at home.

Hi everyone,I have joined the forum on behalf of my husband,he was diagnosed on the 18-04-2013 with type 2.

I have been reading here since last Thursday, and it has been a big help the food thing is driving me mad though

Mike my husband is a lorry driver, so his packed lunch is pretty hard he has 4 rounds of Burgen bread with chicken on or roast beef and pickles,1 plum or 1 apple and a sugar free jelly, do you think that is to much bread I am waiting for a meter to come so we have not done any testing yet.

He also has porridge oats made with water and a sweetener for breakfast, my son does the Atkins diet so he is helping with the carbs educating me, and Mike has just started exercising 10 mins a night on his bike, but he does have weak legs due to a spinal avm 7 years ago. We have 2 daughters also both married and 4 grandchildren .To be honest I think it's me who is more stressed out
about it all I can't think about anything but food for him.Sorry for miserable first post.

Hi to you all.
My name is Mike, I am 75 years old, male, live in South Gloucestershire, England.
I'm not religious, have no pets (except my lovely wife), definitely Microsoft.
I've recently been diagnosed with IFG (Impaired Fasting Glycaemia), which accompanies my Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease.
I have been contemplating buying a Blood Glucose tester.
Questions are:
Should I, or do I wait till the GP suggests it ? If so which one? Are they available on NHS?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi& welcome
See your diabetic nurse and ask her if she has any freebees, most will have a stock of meters given to them by reps that they hand out free. you may have to pay for the test strips though, ask your GP how often you should test as well. some will say a couple of times a week, all depends on your current situation.

Good luck

I have pretty much had enough.................
Diagnosed type 1 in 97, 37 yrs old at that time, i was working in a desert in the Yemen at the time (not best place to be) i was amazingly lucky to receive the correct diagnosis and treatment, my company had Medical insurance cover for us with SOS International, they were brilliant, but, when i arrived home, (Im English but live in Taiwan) i lapsed into a coma for 5 days, i awoke in intensive care, and my mother was there, my wife had contacted her and she flew from UK to Taiwan immediately, got the required treatment and i was out of hospital a week later, and since then, its all downhill, my wife said she couldn't cope with me being diabetic, she then went out and had a couple of affairs, one with my friend, we had a young son at the time, he was only 1 yr old, long story short, we divorced, and i have next to zero access to my son as she says she does not want him to be around me because of my diabetes, im back working, making good money as always have, i take care of my boy financially very well , but still she wont let me see him, everything has fallen apart and im just about ready to give up, the Taiwan law favors the mother and her decisions, i have tried to fight this on several occasions to no avail, diabetes dosent just screw your body up, but everything else also, i cant do this anymore, i give up,,,,

Don't give up. Please DO NOT GIVE UP. What you are going through sounds like a living hell. Not being able to see your son is heartbreaking. Sometimes adversity shows people in a light we could never have expected. Is there any possibility of your son's mother agreeing to access for you? Life does throw the most diabolical things at us and it can feel impossible to bear but you can get through this. This forum is a haven of comfort, support and solid advice so please stick with us.
