Don’t see my first post so will try again. I am 75 widow living near London Ontario Canada. I garden quite a lot. Keep my own house. Hobbit’s, sewing, gardening, stain glass, trying to self learn water colour. I have problems with Metformin side effects. Can’t leave house in morning until I get over you know what. I see a Homeopathic Dr. I get quite discouraged at times.

Hello! You can call me Nnero

I was diagnosed with T2 two months ago when I went in for some other tests and the doctor decided to do a comprehensive set of tests. Fasting blood sugar was 460 (25.5) and PP was 560 (31.1). Needless to say I was asked to come into the emergency room. I had no symptoms other than excessive thirst. I was put on SR insulin 15 units/day and metformin. Within 1 month my average fasting numbers were around 120 ( 6.6) and PP in the region of 150 (8.3) with the help of a drastic diet change and regular exercise. My goal was to stop insulin asap. after 1 month the doctor stopped insulin and moved me to epagliflozin 10mg 1 x daily and metformin 500mg twice daily. Continuing the diet and exercise I have managed to bring my numbers down to fasting 90 (5) and pp 110 (6.1). I still see some spikes which I cannot attribute to anything, and in joining this forum I hope to understand the challenge others face and relate to my own challenges, seeking advice and motivation to continue this journey. As part of my job I regularly attend events with large, multi-course meals and plenty of wine and cocktails, so it can be difficult and I do see my number increasing slightly when I attend these events, but I try and increase my exercise proportionately which seems to help without any additional need for meds.

Good morning, all

I'm Erika, 73 years old, born in Germany and moved to the UK (Leeds) in 1976. Married with children, grandchildren and now one great-grandchild.
Diabetes runs in my family. In fact, I am the only one who has so far been able to hold it at bay, although I am now prediabetic. My mother and aunt went blind due to diabetes, and my sister was losing her sight before she died of multiple organ failure. My mother also had gangrene in her foot. Everybody in my family has / had diabetes and I am very keen to avoid getting Type 2.
I have been checking my morning fasting blood sugar levels for about 15 years now and can see that the monthly average is slowly rising into the lower 6. I can usually bring it down with low carb eating, but also am prone to carb-comfort-eating when stressed.
I have a number of other health issues (chronic fatigue/ME, systemic sclerosis, aortic stenosis, arthritis) which means I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle. Will try my best not to add Type 2 to those.
I study (MA in Archaeology) and am busy with humanitarian issues. Generally positive and happy.
