Morning all. New to the forum and new to T1 diabetes! Bit of a shocker and having a few rough days coming to terms with it all.

I’m a middle-aged man, love cycling and squash and generally being fit so desperate to get well, control the readings and then work out how to get back on the bike / court. Some of the threads on here indicate it’s possible so will definitely be looking for advice.

Re the questions, I don’t have any tattoos, live in East Yorkshire, have 3 kids and a very understanding wife (see above re squash and cycling!). Music taste is quite bland I suppose - I like music with words and a tune which seems to be a thing that old people say according to my kids.

Any kind words re coming to terms with things and/or suggestions on how to exercise safely very much appreciated.

Hi @The_Bowlii , welcome to the forum.
What about starting a thread with your questions?

But to get you started, I think this post is good for helping getting to terms with your diagnosis: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/5-things-any-newly-diagnosed-type-1-should-know.175425/
And here is a lot about exercise: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/managing-exercise-and-insulin.127691/

Ok here go's
Hi I am Bill, UKBill on specialist international forum for a rare genetic condition called HFI.
HFI is an interesting one because to us all sources of Fructose are toxic and cause liver, kidney, intestinal and even in severe cases brain damage.
I am the ONLY one of us to go diabetic. lol why be awkward when with a little effort.. you know the rest.
I am 67 now and have never been able to eat any fruit or sweet foods without vomiting and going hypo caused by Fructose poisoning.
My mother went Diabetic at 85 and my brother (who was a vegetarian for 30 odd years) went diabetic in his late 50's I have only just passed the threshold.
So it seems I have a genetic cause for my type 2.
I also have NASH due to the liver damage caused by mostly inappropriate dietary advice all my life even after my first diagnosis in 1987.
No dietician could get their heads around the idea that ZERO fruit and vegetables was a good idea.. lol so they all kept pushing vegetables at me that made me sick.
Anyway. That is in the past.
I am very happy to be HFI (not a single rotted tooth) and even though I really like my food not too over weight.
So what works for me is possibly not going to be what works for anyone else.
I have a CGM and that has been a revelation and showed exactly what was causing my problems.
My high carb breakfast! Peaks of over 15.4 that took about 3 hours to drop back below 11. Later the same day a single soft white cheese topped bread roll pushed me over 13.6 and it took 4 hours to drop below 11.
That was the 12th August today the 5th September and all this month so far I have not gone beyond the 11 top level! My resting 12 hour blood sugar levels are slowly dropping down and are now between 5 and 6 most of the time.
Tonight my main meal was a chicken curry with more than 1/2 a plate of white boiled rice.. eaten at 19.15 I peaked at 9.4 and am now slowly dropping to 7.2, 4 hours later.
For me this is a win! :) My only concern is my cholesterol level now... but that is a different story lol.
For me the CGM is a life changer.
I hope to be completely clear of medication in less than 12 months. That is my challenge for now.
P.S no I am not short of ANY micronutrients even folic acid I get more than enough from meat. The only thing I get short of is vitamin C so take a supplement (slow release 500mg) daily. Currently trying not to eat any veg oils except extra virgin Olive oil, which if you think about it is the only vegetable oil humans have ever been exposed to before recent times in the millions of years we have been evolving. This seems to agree with my body. lol.
To answer some of the other questions.
I am dyslexic and possibly / probably ADHD as well
I am British / English.
Yes I am a nerd!
Yes I am male.
yes I do like stupid jokes and clever ones too, although I can only actually remember the dirty ones..
Religion.. really? err really?
Love Terry Pratchett, Tolken, Physicist Brian Cox, David Attenborough etc type books and broadcasts.. well I did say I was a nerd right?
Music is anything good and skilfully played from Folk to heavy rock.. I exclude only thrash metal, punk and Northern soul and some of the more "arty" (meaning rubbish) Jazz and "experimental" orchestral music.
I like real art that makes you think anything but why am I looking at this pile of junk and dirty cloths that cost HOW MUCH?
Hobbies when I get time include fixing things.. DIY, cars, motorbikes etc. Hill walking. Swimming, getting beaten up by grand kids. Petting anyone's dog (currently we do not have one.) etc. I also want to get my telescope fixed, the auto tracker is on the blink.
As a heterosexual man I do not see the point or attraction in watching for 2 hours 22 millionaire men chasing a bag of gas and getting hot and sweaty in their underwear.. Women's foot ball however .. yes I can see a point in that.. they are also very much more skilful too.
Most of my spare time is taken up supporting other people with HFI and the parents of newly diagnosed babies who are always panicking about how to feed a baby that must not eat fruit chocolate or vegetables.. ever!

Truly the food advice we are all given is terrible, it should not be eat 5 portions of fruit or veg a day, it should be do not eat more than one item of ultra processed food a day!

To give you an idea of how my life usually runs my wife and I decided we wanted a dog (she) we decided it was going to be something small and fluffy.. we ended up with a fabulous Great Dane.. a dog that is about as far away from small and fluffy as anyone can get! A breed I would recommend to anyone who has a spare 3 seater chair and do not mind when you get up in the night for a "natural need" then find your warm bed is now occupied by 56Kilo of dog who has no intention of moving.. lol I do miss her every single day.

I firmly believe life is far too short so get the hell out and enjoy it while you can!

So keep smiling everyone and remember to Eat Safe!

Yes I do have a very small charity supporting other people with HFI called eatsafe.org.

ancient
- Which city/area do you live in?
Near Melbourne, Victoria (Australia)
- Do you have any pets?
Well now, that's hard to say. I used to, but my furry fellow, Magnus, died a few years ago. But around that time, we moved house and the new place came with two cats. One feral and one stray. The feral was badly injured and near death, so we started feeding him. The stray sometimes came around for snacks, too. The feral died a few days ago, but the stray is still hanging around, so I offer her food, butb she's not all that interested. Do I have a cat? I don't know.
- Which sport(s) (if any) do you like/play?
I have never been sporty, but I love a good walk.

I used to love it! I haven't had the opportunity in decades, though. I expect that these old bones would find it less enchanting than they ponce did.

Many times.

Hi everyone, hope you are all well. It is the first time that I have registered and joined the community.

My name is Ajit (AJ for short), 41yrs old male from Nottingham UK. I was diagnosed with T2 in November 2021, however the Metformin tablets were not reducing my BG levels. In March 2022, I was officially diagnosed with T1 and have been using Insulin ever since. I am taking Levemir (morning and night) and NovoRapid (x3 times a day).

I have to be honest and say that my life was changed totally since March 2022. It was such a big shock that it really effected my mental and physical health. In addition, I have had Cervical Spine surgery in 2018, and since then suffer from Disc degenerative disease in my neck, but was also told after a MRI scan last year that my Lumber discs are in bad shape. At present I suffer daily with sever neurological pain from my neck, to my arms, lower spine and waist, and now its going down my legs and feet. I am also taking Duloxeitine 120mg and Rosuvastatin 10mg.

I live with my wife, x2 daughters 12yrs and 2 yrs, and also my elderly parents whom I look after. I was working previously when I was diagnosed but stopped in May 2023, as I was not able to focus due to the severe pain.

Joining a community like this will help me get through this as by talking to others I know that sharing each others experiences we can move forward together.

Looking forward to getting to know many of you :)
