Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hi from Jenny105
Diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 , 2 years ago. My situation is unusual. I had lost 12kgs in less than 9m and weighed 57kg . I was diagnosed with a glucose level 96. I continued to lose weight down to 44 kg. First it was thought i was type 1.5 lada. Then type 2 using metformin, Then using lower metformin and 1 x insulin pen in am only/ I am over 65 . Live in UK. Am struggling with what to eat to GAIN weight and but ALSO what to eat to keep monitor readings at suitable glucose levels. I'd like to meet TYPE 2 with insulin (once a day only) to share experiences
I now weigh 50kg. Readings generally go from 8 - 11. I do not get help on this from my Diabetic Nurse. On holiday in spain readings were 5 - 15 max either way

Hi @Jenny 105 , welcome to the forum.
What about starting a thread of your own with your questions, so people can reply to it without it being hidden in this introductory thread?
Or the moderators can move your post to a new thread if you like, just ask. :)

I'm sure some T2's on insulin will react to such a thread.

What type of insulin are you on?
And are you very sure you're a T2? I was thought to be a T2 for two years but turned out to be a T1 (LADA) after all, in the early stages of LADA it isn't always easy to diagnose.

I have been doing most of my own research but have so far lost no weight. I am thinking of looking into the carnivore diet as hubby is on that and losing weight already in one week. Looking forward to having more people in the same boat as me to talk to.

Hello! I am very pleased to be here as the Forum seems a good place to be.
My name is Sue and I am fortunate to live in Cornwall.
At my annual review April 2023, my HBA1c was 42. My GP sent me to an info session run by the diabetic nurse. She suggested either: enrolling on a self guided online pre-diabetic program or attending a F2F group locally. I chose the online version. I was a bit shocked to find myself labelled as pre-diabetic. The online programme is Second Nature, which as you probably know, provides low-carb recipes, a set of digital scales, a link to a coach (dietician, nutritionist or similar) and psychological training to form new habits. As my BMI was well within range, I didn’t need to lose weight - but I did by following the food guidelines and I certainly didn’t need to form an exercise habit as this has been part of my life since my teens and I am now 74! After 3 months HBA1c was 39. SN asked me, finally, to consult my GP to see whether the program was still suitable for me as my BMI was v low: 18. He said come off it - so I did but continued low carb. After a further 3 months HBA1C was 43, I was quite upset by this. Went to see GP (another one, no choice) who said eat more carbs & diagnosed impaired glucose tolerance. However, I do not wish to sleep walk into diabetes.
The only difference between the 39 and 43 readings - my husband was very ill: 2 hospital admissions & I needed to do home nursing - the most demanding thing I have ever done. He’s much better now but I wonder whether stress could have affected my readings, I understand cortisol has an effect on blood glucose.
What to do? Continue low carb? Buy a glucometer to monitor my blood levels?
Sorry this is long!
I am active, I walk almost daily, I’m a member of a weekly walking group, sing in a community choir, swim once a week, volunteer with the SW Coastpath Association, enjoy the outdoors and company of local family and friends.

Hi. I'm new here, just 3 days on Metformin, did anyone get really bad upset stomach with diarrhea?
Hello and welcome, @roseym84
There are threads about this problem with Metformin. For some people it settles. Others have changed to a slow release version, or a change of meds completely. Others manage with change of diet.

Why not start a new thread with your question? You will get more targeted responses by doing that..

This thread will hopefully let us to get to know one another better and allow us to see which users we might share similarities with. I've listed a set of questions below that you can answer to tell us more about yourself. By no means do you have to answer all of them, and if you feel like adding further information, feel free.

Hello I do not know where is the right place to introduce myself, hope it’s here…
I ‘m Sue, a fairly fit and active woman aged 74. I am fortunate to live in lovely Cornwall, UK not far from the sea with a quiet beach, great for swimming and within walking distance. I belong to my village church, sing in a community choir, swim sea and indoor pool and love walking. I volunteer with the South West Coast Path Association. I’ve been married to Mike for nearly 51 years and we are fortunate to have our family fairly close by. Camping and caravanning were part of our lives for always but sold the caravan in lockdown.
Bit gutted to find myself pre-diabetic, of three recent HBA1C readings, two were just out of range and one was back in. Most recent was OOR. I lost weight on diabetic nurse suggested Second Nature, when I really didn’t need to, off that program now & hope, by being very careful, to be back in range permanently. Now have a glucometer. Looking forward to forums which I’m sure will be helpful.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on 9/11/15, my HbA1c at that initial test was 56, since then i have lost 5st 6lb in weight. my last HbA1c was 51.

In between 2015 and now though i went of the rails a bit, as i passed my annual check every year i got a bit complacent and started to go back to my old eating habits like [subsituting an entire Chocolate gateux in place of a meal] thinking i could justify it.

That is until 2nd October this year, when late in the evening i started to get a burning sensation that was pulsing in my right ankle along with really bad pains, it was so bad i could not get to sleep, so i got up and did some research online and realised that I needed to change my ways, so the following day i started a 1000 calorie a day diet for 3 weeks which stopped the problems in my foot in just over 2 days and lost me 12lb, my problem is that i have been my wifes full time carer for over 25 years and in the last 4 years she has been on a hospital bed in the living room. so exercise has been a problem always sitting around watching TV, rather than before when she could go out on her mobility scooter, and i could work out in the garden or workshop.

So now i am back to walking in the morning when she is asleep as well as catching up with all the things i had been putting off as they would involve leaving the house , such as, finally got my teeth sorted out (had toothache for over 2 months), have an appointment to have my eyes tested next week as the glasses i have on now are over 12 years old, my newer ones (only 7 years old were lost when my wife was in hospital in March), finally got the lawn cut (the first time this year), so hopefully i can stick to it this time.

Back in 2014 i weighed 22st 7lb, today i was 17st 1lb and i hope to get to my target weight of 13st 7lb by the end of next year or sooner.

Hobbies include the family Tree which i have back to 1562, Railways i collect railway hardware particularly oil lamps of which i have 50, but other stuff as well

Favourite Music is varied but includes Classical, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Abba, Carpenters, Enya, Blue, Led Zeppelin and so on
