My name is Keith, I am 57 years old, semi retired, married with 2 children.
I recently had a random blood test which appeared to shock my GP.
He looked up from his computer screen and said he would have expected to see a rather overweight person sitting next to him, or a diabetic, with the BG results he was looking at. He suggested that the figure of 12 was double what he would have expected.
My cholesterol level was also around 7 (which was around the figure I expected) it was up to 8.5 several years ago.
I am about to have fasting tests for both to provide a clearer picture.
I researched cholesterol levels several years ago and was quite shocked by the differences of opinion of what is acceptable or not (including the idea of the ‘Great Cholesterol Con’ by Dr Malcolm Kendrick). The BG numbers were completely new to me but it didn’t take a great deal of research to realise there was a problem (along with the dry mouth symptoms I had been having).
It has been very useful reading through some of the posts with so many helpful suggestions and guidance particularly in dealing with the GPs.
I am already a great believer in planning your own future. I intend to learn as much as possible in the hope of managing to control my BG levels with diet and exercise alone. In order to do this I need to be able to test regularly and have access to test strips (ideally on prescription).

"Hi I am the partner of a diabetic diagnosed in November aged 54 and Type 1. Started on insulin then attended DAFNE course in January. Am a little confused, as is he, that something strange is happening to his BG readings. Has only ever had 1 slight hypo and has had normal readings since starting insulin. At diagnosis his reading was 30!!!.
However we were away in Europe for 2 weeks and ate meals on the run unusual foods and at strange times and readings were always normal ie between 4 and 6. On our return he decided to experiment and took no basal insulin and no QA insulin for a day....... BG results normal. Any ideas what is going on anybody.....our DSN doesn't appear to be bothered about the normal readings and lack of insulin. He is back on his basal insulin and DSN told him to alter ratio of QA to half. Any comments would be appreciated. Many thanks"
However we were away in Europe for 2 weeks and ate meals on the run unusual foods and at strange times and readings were always normal ie between 4 and 6. On our return he decided to experiment and took no basal insulin and no QA insulin for a day....... BG results normal. I'm not an expert in type 1 at all, I'm type 2, but isn't there a thing shortly after diagnosis called a honeymoon period where insulin requirements (injected) are much lower? And then gradually that ends and you have to do proper, regular injections? I'm sure a person with type 1 will be along shortly to clarify

A rose commemorating my Nanna called Rose on my right hip, a Joker and Harley Quinn lovers tattoo on my right foot (I'm a comic book geek) and it was for my boyfriend, a Chun Li main body piece from mid left thigh to rib cage (also a gamer and it reminds me of easier times during my youth), a butterfly emerging from vines on my lower back to signify changing for the better. Piercings include belly bar, right nipple bar, eyebrow bar, nose stud, tragus bar, 2 ear piercings and an ear cuff ring.
