From what I've been told about these Diabetic Anonymous Clubs, you're better off here. I have also been told to attend but will be after Christmas so by that time I might have learned enough to teach the nurse something.:D

Wow.. Already so many responses and I have only just joined.

OK, here goes,

My name is Alan Warden.

I was born in December 1956, so I have just turned 58

I am a UK national, but currently living in the Costa Blanca in Spain

I am not at all religious !

I am easy going, far too much for my own good !

I have two noisy little Bichons, both boys.

Microsoft naturally, but I do like Apple gear.

Not exactly the sporting type, but I do have a home Gymnasium..

Takes while to get me riled up, but watch out when I do...

No Tattoos or piercings thanks, (too much of a wimp)

Music I listen to most: Queen, Dire Straits, Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, Any other good old rock n' roll

Obviously just an old Rocker.

No favourite flags... never really thought about it

Went camping twice.. it rained constantly both times - never again!

Still in love with my wife of 36 years

Never used fake tan, seen too many orange bodies on my hols..

Used to travel to the Canaries every year, also been to Florida and Turkey.

Hate cities.. had to work in London for a while and detested every minute !

Don't watch a lot of telly, but do like CSI shows, Bones, also the Big Bang Theory and some Sci Fi

Favourite films include "The Green Mile" for some reason, also Star Wars trilogies, Avatar, loads of lame comedies..

Definitely not Wealthy, just scraping by on what I earn right now.

I spent over 30 years in the I.T. industry and have earned some great money working as a contractor for Motorola, Lloyds bank and the M.O.D
Down side was that I was spending half my life in my car...
Gave it all up for a life in the sun working as a singer and guitarist here in Spain - bit of a life changer !
I spent 13 years in the Royal Air Force as an Aircraft Electrical Engineer so I have extensive knowledge of all things electrical.

What I like most about myself is the ability to entertain audiences of all ages with my natural guitar playing skills. I am self taught and play entirely by ear.

What I dislike mostly is that age is catching up with me, what with the Diabetes and also Dupuytrens Contracture affecting my hands, I can feel things starting to fail, even though in my head I am still a big kid !

Hi Alan, welcome to the forum :-)

Thanks. I was diagnosed Type 2 diabetic in July. I had eyes tested and dieted to reduce my weight from 192 lb (87kg) to 170 lb (77kg) now. At my last blood test I was told my blood was normal. ie not diabetic.

I now have to watch developments regarding my weight. My diet consisted of much less carbs and more fruit. No cakes or deserts and lower fat. My wife, who mainly cooks hates fats but I believe it is carbohydrates which put on weight and I enjoy oils and meat with some fat content. So, whilst I militate towards more extra virgin and rapeseed oil, my wife reduces fat wherever she can.

I used to enjoy always a hearty breakfast. Fresh fruit, a boiled/poached egg on toast, Then toast and home made peanut butter with a little homemade marmalade. Now, typically I have a single slice of toast, no butter and a poached egg. I have almost finished losing weight - another 2 lb to go to get a body/mass index of 24.8.

Hey all,

My name is Paul and I was diagnosed with type 1 on New Year's Even 2013 (i.e. nearly been a year).

I'm glad to have found such a clearly active community and I will read on with interest.

Paul

I thought I would stop by and say hello, My husband has type 2 and until recently was managing every thing ok until we went for a check up with the dietician, who told him he was being too strict and to let the reins out a little.
Well, now not only are the reins out the horse has bolted and the stable has burnt to the ground.
I'm hoping to gain knowledge and understanding before it's too late.
