Is it normal for a child to have crystals in their gall blad

My son has been having severe stomach aches everyday for the last 3 months He is being seen by a GI specialist and they can't figure out what's causing the stomach aches. During a recent ultrasound they found several small crystals in his gall bladder. There was no obstruction or blockage but They decided to prescribe meds.

The doc insists that these crystals can't possibly be the source of his pain but they will have him take meds to break down the crystals. After reading up on gall stones and children I have found that they do cause pain regardless of obstruction. After seeking a second opinion, I was informed that he did in fact have several small crystals but the new doc said that everyone has crystals in their gall bladder. Is this true? I am asking because I am now unsure if he should take the meds that the one doc prescibed or if he should follow the second docs orders and do nothing...

Re: Is it normal for a child to have crystals in their gall

Hi Whitesurfer

Don't know about crystals in the gall bladder, but my Son (who is diabetic) suffered for a while with stomach aches and smelly No.2's and was losing weight. Are there any of these symptoms :?: He had a blood test and also a biopsy and was diagnosed with coeliac disease. He is now on a gluten free diet.

Has he had a blood test to determine any of these :?: He could have a wheat allergy even. It's worth getting a blood test done to at least cancel these out.

Good Luck :|

I had crystals in my urinary tract. Pain!!!!!!!  My GP thought they were caused by eating too much soft fruit. They bloomin well can cause pain because the points of the crystals can impact on tissue. Hope it gets resolved but keep pushing your GP.
