There's another way. If you get a reading like that, go to A & E, and when you see the doctor, tell them your GP won't refer you to the diabetic clinic. The A&E can refer you too, I believe.

Also, see this NHS page about your care. It's practically the first sentence on the page that you will see a specialist:

I think it would be a good idea to print this off and take it to your GP, if that doesn't convince them them tell them you'll write to your local MP.

How many of you type 1s are under a hospital team and how many are just under the GP?

Hi. I'm T1.5 and on Basal/Bolus yet never been referred to a consultant as I'm listed as a T2 despite being slim etc. I had a wonderful DN who had worked at the diabetes clinic so I had a very good start on insulin at the surgery. My new DN is less knowledgeable but does a good job overall. If you have one or two good nurses with some diabetes training then you don't need to be referred unless you have control problems. My original DN started me carb-counting from the start and gave me a leaflet with typical food values. To say you don't need to carb count is absolute rubbish and ignorant. You obviously do need some help or guidance with the insulin balance to help get better control. You must carb count and check that your Basal is balanced and then get the Bolus ratio determined for the carb-counting. Most are started at 1 unit of rapid to 10gm carb like I was. You have a right when on insulin to see someone who has good diabetes training so do insist on that.

I see Diabetic Consultant and GP annually. But I have Consultants phone number where I can phone if I need to. After 48 years there is not much Doctors can advise me on in fact I can advise them. That's why I prefer Hospital check up. Diabetic Consultant has looked after me for 30 + years.

I was diagnosed type 2 in December 14 and then following gad test (recommended by my Endo) it was changed to type 1 in May 15. I have been under the hospital ever since. Due to being in the 'honeymoon' phase, I don't think they want to let me go back to to the GP as its a matter of time until my levels rise and I need to start carb counting. Much prefer being under the hospital.

See I'm genuinely concerned about the care I'm getting. I had a high level (over 31.5 as my meter.just displayed HI ) and because this was before the gad test.they had me as.type 2 and told me I didn't need to test for keytones as 'that's only type 1' luckily I sourced a blood keytone monitor and the next time I felt rough I tested and I was 1.5! I just don't trust my care at the gps

First, you need ketone urine testers at the least, urgently. i dont know if you are prescribed these? It sounds as if you have been a slow onset Type one, as i was. in the early '70's GPs were much worse than now, I was not diagnosed as diabetic at all for 7 years, gave up bread after severe pains and tingling etc in hands, this sorted things for a while probably as was lowish carb, then got other symptoms, gave up breakfasts as i felt so unwell in mornings, which left me even lower carb, kept back and forth to GP with thrush, lack of energy etc , told to run round park, sent to rheumatology, it was not until i got a severe ear infection, when i was in a life threatening coma, that i was diagnosed. So it is good you have been diagnosed Type one at last but what happens if any of your own insulin is nearly run out and you have a sudden infection and have not the expertise to sort things out? The GP does not sound as if he is even aware of this danger - say you have tested positive ketones in the past, that you know DKA is life threatening, and insist on a referral, as you need expert experience and help to keep safe. Put this all in a letter as well, and copy it in to your CCG.

You definitely need to be seen by your hospital Diabetic clinic. Can you get an appointment with another G.P at your practice or even see the nurse that specialises in Diabetes at your local surgery as she can refer you. When I returned to the UK a few years ago I was having big problems controlling my BG and the nurse at the local surgery got me an urgent appointment at the hospital clinic the next day. My local hospital are really wonderful and within a year I attended a course before maybe moving to a pump. After the course which included all the info you need to know about type 1, my control was so good that We all agreed that I would be fine without the pump. The clinic also provided me with meters. One for my Ketones and a second one which works out how much insulin I need to take depending on the amount of carbs I want to eat. The course also helped me sort out the insulin to carb ratio which you will need to know. I also got the Collins tiny Calorie Counter book from WHSmiths. This also gives the carb values for 100 gms of all sorts of food. Also bought a pair of digital scales. If you are not in Scotland you need to apply for an exemption certificate so all your prescriptions will be free. If not you could be fined if you don't pay for your prescriptions. Also get some T1 id. The ICE site is brilliant. If you drive you need to check out what you should do before driving and check out the DVLA site as T1 will affect you.
