Hi all just had a phone call from my dsn at gp surgery and we just had a major fall out, let's go back by a few weeks, I had a letter from dr surgery saying they were changing my needles to a cheaper version, I wasn't happy about this as I'm happy with my 5mm novo twist needles, so I haven't got no choice on this so such is life I have to try them. Last week I had to see the doctor about my mood swings and got on to the subject about them changing my needles and they had a directive from the local health board telling them to put everyone on to these needles. Doctor asked me to try them and if I can't get on with them to go back and they will sort something else out, ok fair enough, so I have been reading a lot on here about the novopen echo and I have been thinking about this, so I rang novo nor disk about them and was told it was comparable with my insulin just need to change to cartridges instead of pre-filled pens, and I figure this would be a lot cheaper than the pre-filled pens. So I asked the doctors to be switched to this system, doctor said she couldn't do it but would ask dsn to do it for her as she deals with all diabetes related things in the surgery. So I get a phone call from dsn she can't change me on to this system as I have to go to the diabetes clinic to do this. As novomix 30 may not be comparable and may have to change my insulin. Then she said I see your not taking metformin anymore and why not so I told her about the stomach problems cramps the runs, the wind the fermentation and the odd smell coming from my skin, and was told this was impossible as I was on mr metformin. And it was down to the Victoza, not metformin, I told her that the Victoza is fine and I don't have any more problems with it her exact word was how did you find that out. So I told her everything calmed down when I stopped taking metformin, and if I start taking it again I have major stomach problems with in hours of taking it, so in the end she agreed that it is metformin causing the problems and to contact the diabetes clinic

Sorry a bit of a long rant and she also told me that metformin helps you lose weight which is wrong as well

I think metformin can help with a small weight loss - it certainly did for me, but then I had to stop taking it because of gastritis. I've put back on the 4 extra kgs I lost whilst taking it. When the GP prescribed it for me he said I could expect some more weight loss and he was right.

I'm not too sure if the Novomix 30 is compatible with the NovoPen Echo so it's not a bad suggestion to go back to the diabetes clinic and get some advice, alternatively you could ring the Novo Nordisk helpline and ask them.

If you do change from Novomix 30 to Novorapid then you will need to see the diabetes clinic as Novomix 30 contains both a quick acting insulin and an intermediate-acting insulin, so they may need to start you on a basal insulin if you do switch.

Novomix 30 is compatible as I have already rang the help desk

I've not lost weight on Metformin, I do believe it has an affect on appetite.

Understandable so don't worry it. I don't know much about Metformin but I've read time and time again on the forum that some tolerate the slow-release version better, don't know if this helps at all......

Noblehead is right, the metformin SR is much kinder on the system. You could try asking for that ? Metformin doesn't really make you lose weight but it is thought to help suppress appetite but I never found that to be the case. I know it's frustrating but maybe going to the diabetes clinic and talking things through would be a good idea. Hope you get sorted soon.

I already got sr metformin sorry I put mr as that is what she said this morning. And I am bad on it my partner hates the wind with it but what I hate is being doubled up with the stomach cramps and the runs, my grandmother couldn't take metformin and I see to be the same

Hi. There are a few people who can't tolerate Metformin in any form. When you are on insulin it isn't vital to have it. If I were you I would try to reduce the carbs in your diet enough to reduce weight so you can come off Victoza. I would then discuss with your clinic if they will move you onto a Basal/Bolus regime which gives the best control but does involve two pens and one or two more injections. Weight loos is the key to getting the best overall control with insulin.
