Hello all . Been fighting off type 2 for a few years. Bad winter has meant I lost a bit of the battle and now prescribed tablets.. I got down to a 50 blood thingy.. now 57 hence tablets. I exercise and fast 5 day a week but was far too naughty at the weekend.. this is just a general hello .I am quite stocky and now face challenge of dropping to 190 lbs. Hello everyone….

Hello @gregcollins and welcome to the forum.
May I ask how long your fasts are? Obviously you don't fast for 24hrs five days a week, because that would be fasting for a whole 5 days!

Being 'naughty' over 1 weekend will hardly affect your HbA1C at all, since that is an indication of your average blood glucose over the life of your red blood cells - which is approximately 3 months!

Do you have a Blood Glucose meter? And if so, do you test your body's reaction to the carbohydrates in your meals? Most of us find this helps us choose food which is healthy for a Diabetic rather than the whole grain, low fat stuff which is supposed to be healthy, but for us is anything but healthy !

Thank you for reply. I generally fast for 16 to 18 hours 5 or 6 days a week. I have just bought a blood monitor but not really sure what numbers mean. I am new to the type2 thing. Should I be the blood glucose monitor to test after every meal initially? I am quite strict as I only eat 2 meals a day and mon to Friday only eat about less than 2k calories per day but was stupid at the weekend. I run quite about 20k plus per week so keep active. Any advice on best approach to work out how to use monitor glucose where and when greatly appreciated.

T2s using low carb to get their blood sugar down generally test just before then 2 hours after a meal to check how we cope with carbs.

This has the blood test chart for finger prick tests

You mention calories, not carbs... It's the carbs we can't process, the calories aren't the issue. Test before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite. If you're up no more than 2.0 mmol/l or less, you're all good.

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html might help some. You already do pretty good with the fasting, now just switch from low cal to low carb... Bob's your uncle.

Thanks ton jokalsbeak and Tricia ed. You both really helped. I did the test before eating and got 4.5. I got 6.6 exactly 2 hours after with one metformin tablet. I learned a whole lot from all on this thread today. I am going to do tests each day before and after main meal for a week to see how the low carb diet goes. Again I can’t thank you all enough. I’m finding it all a bit daunting so far but you guys have helped a lot.

Hi. Yes, forget Calories as they don't represent any specific food group and each group has a different effect on blood sugar (and weight gain etc). Carbs have the biggest effect. I think you may have to get used to handling both your fasting and diabetes in the longer term if you need meds in the future.
