Hi All

Been on Gliclazide and metaformin for just over week. Gliclazide in the morning and metaformin with evening meal
I check my sugar legals fairly often just to see how different things are taking an effect.
Thursday evening arrived home from work it was reading 4.0 so had a meal and took my metaformin
steak, mushrooms, peppers, egg it went up to 5.5 so I did 15 minutes on the exercise bike and it dropped to 3.3
First time its dropped that low, got it back up
Friday it was 4.6 when I got home, had an evening meal and metaformin, lamb, veg, mushroom and egg. and it dropped to 3.9
got it back up with a couple of sweets and a can of beans :) and it went to 9.5, then 10 minutes on the bike and it was back to 4.2
and an hour later 5.0
Am I overdoing it with the lack of carbs, still learning what works.
just to add even with my levels in the 3's I felt fine non of the symptoms of hypo Ive read about
cheers
Steve

I'm surprised you aren't getting any symptoms at that level. Are you using a meter or a sensor such as dexcom or libre?

The sensors aren't as accurate as meters...

I have always took it as glicazide is a booster drug ,thats works in conjunction with metformin,,bit surprised you were put straight onto both ,maybe I,ve been wrong for years
Also I,ve experienced hypos when sugar went down to 3.
Just thinking Steven ,do you do a desk job ,was thinking about the exercise thing

suggest keeping a food and exercise diary, marking in glucose levels and timings as well. Bring that to your next appt. if you made a large change in carbs it would be well worth discussing that with your dsn/endo. might be if much more active than the norm could possibly reduce a little bit you'd need to get medical advice on that.

I have had levels in the 3s and felt fine BUT I’ve never taken Gliclazide. If I was in your position and had a review I would ask to reduce the meds, rather than increase the carbs. Just my preference.

Rachox ,I,ve moved a few times in past 25 years and different doctors ,I,ve always been bit blown away how one diabetic doctor can be so distant to another doctor on diabetes and at times to a worrying level.

Previous to my high blood sugar diagnosis my diet was pretty much all carbs, never gave it a thought. Oven chips probably 3 times a week, with white bread, curry with rice at least once a week. Sausages, pies, crisps, fizzy pop.
barely any veg , did eat fruit but all the wrong fruit like grapes, cherries.
probably 5 coffees a day at work, with one sugar
Maccies on a Sunday, yep really healthy diet looking back.
pretty much give all that up, switched to fresh fish, steaks, tuna , salmon, eggs, peppers, whole meal bread, mushrooms, chicken, lamb, now on black tea no sugar, once or twice a working day, then water rest of the day
and rather than jar sauces been making chili and curry from scratch so I know whats in it
Yes behind a desk most of the day, sat on the sofa in the evening.

What was your BG before you started the medicines ?
Initial test was 11.7 that was a month ago, Thats when I brought a monitor, without the meds I was probably between 7 and 9 with changes to my diet. According to my monitor my 7day average is 6.6 and 14 days 7.2.
Been on the meds a week

I was just remembering ,because being totally honest ,when I first became diabetic ,I was a stone mason ,and for very very long time ,whilst on Metformin ,I almost ate just what I fancied and never gave it a thought ,because i was daily burning off my sugars,it was not till I began to slow up with age etc ,that my diabetic issues surfaced.
Steven ,word of advise from an old timer ,never hold back in challenging your doctors , nothing to loose ,and at times it makes them jump a bit higher.

you are doing very well, the reason I ask is I have had false hypos where your body acts as if having a hypo when you are used to higher sugar levels, they are rather scary especially first and second times. I was told 4 jelly babies whenever you go walking and lets say one time in some woods I was very glad of them

If you are getting lows from either false hypos or from actual very low BG levels, it is more likely to be the glicizide. Because that is what it is designed to do.
You will need to speak to your GP, and ask for the dosage to be reduced.
Eating more carbs, when doing so, is inevitable because your average hba1c and fasting BG levels will only rise again.

The big reason why GP's and other such as dsns differ so much on advice and treatment. Is because they have been trained in general medicine, and the majority are not trained in the specialty of either T1, T2 etc.I
That is why, if your diabetes is complex, you should be referred to a specialist endocrinologist.
Some of the medical profession don't know the difference between T1 and T2. Never mind other conditions related to endocrinology.
