Type 2 Lipid Clinic

I have just returned from the Lipid Clinic appointment and I must say it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know .
I had a whole range of blood tests 2 weeks ago in preparation for this appointment and seems my total cholesterol has gone up to 7. My trigs are fine at 1.2 but my LDL is 5 and too high so needs to come down .
I was offered Statins again !!! This is why I ended up at the clinic because I refused to take them , then I was offered Ezetimibe which I also refused as was offered it by my doctor and has many of the side effects of statins. I was then told if I had not tried this drug then I could not move on to next phase where you can have the new injectable drug. It appears it's expensive do you have to try all options first . I was told to try it for a couple of weeks and if u had any side effects to stop it. Then they could tick the boxes that I had tried it !
Got a follow up appointment in 3 months time .
I kept a food diary for a week before I went listing everything that passed my lips and the only comment was ' don't have too much butter 'Another waste of a morning !!

Just an update on this thread , I have today given myself the first Praluent injection on my new cholesterol medication. I inject it every 2 weeks for the next 3 months and then back at Clinic to see results. Has anyone else been on this type of drug for cholesterol?)

What side effects did you get from the statins? Were they worse than the potential side effects from another stroke? i hope the injections work.

I suffered from the most terrible muscle ache with Statins. I also suffer from arthritis and the two together made it unbearable.
This new medication is for people who can’t tolerate Statins so hopefully it will work. Will post an update in 3 months when I have been back to the Lipid Clinic

Has anyone got a link to the study that shows that women live longer with high LDL cholesterol? And that it makes no difference either way to men? I am baffled by why people on here seem to actively seek to get their LDLcholesterol levels up rather than just not care about them

I’m actively trying to get my levels down, why would anyone want to get their levels of LDL higher?
Because lower levels of cholesterol haven't been shown to necessarily be better for you. In fact in older women higher cholesterol is linked to lower all cause mortality. Check out the results of the PURE study.

Thanks for the info seems I have been brainwashed by the Lipid consultant telling me my LDL is far too high and I am in imminent danger of having another stroke !

Librising is correct, blue tit, but we know what you meant! But strictly speaking a ratio is a ratio, it doesn't have oranges apples or temperature or anything else but has to be explained what it's a ratio of!
The point you made was valid, obviously our friend is good at maths! :)
Derek

Ah ..... I used the mmol/l because these are the units we use for triglycerides in the UK. Many of the websites talking about the value of this ratio are from the US who use different units, and the target ratio shown on these sites is different. I wanted to show that the 0.87 was arrived at using the UK units.

Very kind of you to say you all know what I meant. I wish I did ;) I do know what a ratio is, though :) Or at least I thought I did. But we all know what thought did.

I'm sure your Lipid consultant is trying to act in your best interests. why not ask for a more detailed explanation nest time you go - and if possible share it with us. It is extremely difficult to accurately gauge what people are eating in their own homes and whether they are reporting what they eat correctly. The experts probably know something we don't know about this study.

My fear is that the "experts" know nothing about it at all... the video was removed from youtube a number of times when it first came out.. perhaps I am becoming an old conspiracy theorist but with the enormous sums of money that pharma companies have made from statins over the past 30 or so years I'm afraid that the conspiracy is quite real.

Do you have the name of the study that shows that women live longer with high cholesterol, and a link to it please?
