Losing my eyesight

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum but recent events have pushed me to need to ask questions I have untill now put off. I have been a diabetic since 1990 ( I was 11 years old ) My BG has always been very high.Last year I was told that I have damage at the back of my eyes, now the damage is so bad I am seeing a specialist. I have lost sight in my left eye and my right eye is really bad too. In a year I have needed 4 different pairs of glasses and my eyes hurt most of the time. Basically I need to ask the question I have been too scarted to ask my consultant.

" With diabetic eye damage how long will my sight last"

Am I looking at going blind in a year? or 5? or 10? I am so scared and do not think I can live my life blind.

Any advice or experiences on this matter would be so much appriciated.

People who are touchy.......feign indignation at the slightest thing. Hypocrites, bullies and cowards.
Sorry to hear about your eyesight problems. I don't believe anybody here can answer your questions.

We know nothing about the damage you have to your eyes and if it is irreversible or not. Even then, we are just Diabetics not specialists in Opthamology.

This sort of question is something you really have to ask the Consultant, even then I doubt you would get a definitive answer. Some things are just not able to be answered.

You mention your high Bg levels......you may possibly be able to slow the decline if you control those levels well, that's always assuming that the damage was due to the high Bg levels. I know from my own personal experience that my own eyesight improved dramatically after getting Bg levels down to more normal levels. That worked for me, but I have no idea if it would help you.

See the Consultant, grit your teeth.......ask the questions. Good luck.

Having no energy as this is so limiting.
Hello ferington and welcome to the forum. :)

Sorry to hear of the problems you are having. Ken is right when he says that we cannot answer specialist medical type questions and so you really do need to get another appointment and talk it through. You may find it helpful to take someone with you to make sure that you ask for all the information you need and help to record it so that nothing gets forgotten. It is easy to miss things when we are anxious.

We CAN encourage you to work on your BG levels which will help you overall whether they are responsible for your eye damage or not. Give us more information so that we can help. You say that you levels have always been high so what numbers are you clocking up and also what is your food plan :?:
