Hi
i was diagnosed type 2 about a year ago…I’ve only recently started to measure my blood sugar levels 2 hours after eating
my lunch and dinner levels are fine and indicating a normal level….however two hours after breakfast my tester indicates a low level where it will not even show a glucose level….the card I’m using shows 1.1 mmol/L .as minimum it’s even lower
so my question is how do I get my levels up to normal level with choosing the best breakfast
brekfast is overnight oats with low fat yogurt including a few fresh fruit strawberries berries
I’ve tried scrambled egg also and this also has the same level….to get back to a normal level I’m finding myself having a biscuit or glass of juice
thanks kevin

At lower than that you would likely be unconscious (or not alive), chances are the meter has an issue or the test strips do, because that would not be correct.

Especially if you are not on insulin (your profile say tablets) that level generally would just not happen

Hi Kevspurs
How are you testing your levels,
the card I’m using shows 1.1 mmol/L
What do you mean by this, what card?
There is something amis with whatever you are using to test. If you were really at 1.1 you would be feeling quite unwell, very close to going into a coma I would suspect.
T2's or any other type only usually have low blood sugar if the medication they are taking causes it to go low.
Low blood sugar is not a symptom of diabetes, especially after a high carb breakfast of oats and fruit.

I’ve retested a few times each morning…the same results come back…but then it’s it’s 5.6 ish after lunch and then again after dinner

The card I’m referring to is the chart you get showing low normal high and dangerous levels you can get
from a diabetic blood test kit

If you are getting readings below normal levels after your breakfast, if it isn't faulty or rogue readings. It is maybe because of your intolerance levels to that breakfast.
Oats, regardless of how they get in your bowl, are high carbs, the low fat yoghurt is full of sugar and fruit glucose. A few strawberries are ok!
If I had that for breakfast, because I am so intolerant to carbs, my spike would be very high, which you as a type two just shouldn't be having!
As for the loss (if you are) then speak to your GP about a referral to an endocrinologist.
But, I would get your monitor and strips checked.
Any unusual symptoms when you go low?
Keep safe.

I have had headaches when I wake up and feel very tired…
The very reason I started to test my blood sugar was because I knew something wasn’t right….I hadn’t been advised to by my doctor
I was told to take metaformin…I take the slow release type with my evening meal

Did this happen before you started the metformin? Like the others I struggle to believe that your blood sugar could be 1.1 and you still be conscious. What meter are you using? Are the blood testing strips in date?

I have only started using the blood testing process for a couple of weeks the brand I’m using is called sinocare the kit is in date runs out 2026
I’ve tested this morning again its 6.9 before breakfast
Not sure what’s going on

Random thought but is it possible it is actually saying 11 not 1.1? I’ve no idea about that meter, it’s display or your eyesight but I’ve misread prices before because of decimal point size/placement or even obscured or missing numbers. It it does sound more likely than 1.1

Sinocare instructions say at a reading of 1.1 mmol, retest immediately and if the same, contact medical help. I would have thought at that number you would likely be in a coma.
1.1 mmol is the lowest the Sinocare displays before showing lo.
One thought are you washing your hands and DRYING them properly, water can dilute the sample.

It’s definitely says low which is lower than 1.1
I have retested and it’s the same
I’m gonna speak to the docs tomorrow to see what’s going wrong

Do you have a test liquid that came with it? Some kits do in order to check if the meter is working correctly.

Presumably it’s not the battery being low as it only does it in the mornings.

Have you got access to any other meters to cross check readings, even if only for a day? Could you arrange to be at a chemist that does fingerprick checks after breakfast or ask the surgery if you can pop in and use theirs to confirm or deny what’s happening?

Do you take any other medications or do anything else (hand creams, activities etc etc) that only happens in the morning?

What happens if you eat the same breakfast food for say evening meal?

it would help to have a before meal reading in each case to see what the meal is directly doing and limiting other factors since the last one.

If you have normal levels before breakfast and then drop low afterwards but you don’t feel any ill or different effects from dropping that low it’s unlikely that low in reality. Its very very odd that would only happen at one point in the day though. Even conditions that provoke a non medicated low (reactive hypoglycaemia for example) happen throughout the day

Did you test two hours after?
What was your breakfast?
I would keep a look out for the next couple of days around meals. And if you have enough strips, to test every hour, just to see what spikes and drops you get. If you don't snack, the results will show your hourly results in between meals, as well as pre meal and two hours after. Start keeping a food diary.

There are many reasons for hypoglycaemia, but a reading of 1.1 is so out of the ball park for a type two.
And yes, speak to your GP, and ask for a referral.

Keep safe.

I think in your position I might contact sinocare and ask for a new meter and see if that gives the same results.... Your result it too low to be credible in my opinion. Do you also get hypo symptoms when this happens? (shakiness, hunger, confusion etc).

Why don’t you get a Libre continuous monitor sensor thing and see if that sheds any light on it? Apparently they give out a free trial

Hi I have entered the free trial...many thanks
Just remember they can have odd readings if you lay on it at night (false hypo readings) and some read high or low compared to even the more reliable/believable meters. Trends, direction of movement and scale of movement are still all very useful even if the precise numerical value might be a bit questionable.
