Dr James Muecke reporting how a T2 got rid of macular oedema through diet.

Thanks for sharing @MrsA2

Frustratingly brief account, though. They don't say how long she had been T2 diabetic or insulin dependent or whether she maintained the keto diet in order to remain in remission.

Agree with @EllieM ,
Thank you for sharing & oh my goodness, how annoyingly brief is that report.

Good to see indications low carb might be instrumental though.

I take a keener interest in such now.

Have an appointment for eye surgery at some point, (when they don't actually cancel it.. :banghead: )

Mine wasn't T2D related, but I can't prove it (part of the RTA in my mind) but no one's willing to say yay or nay, for definite.

So I was left swing between anger it was the RTA & wallowing in how devious T2D is, and ways to combat any complications....( and the fact it may be just age related...eek )

Sure none are desirable , but vision is high on my list of things not to damage.

Fantastic that a forum such as this and it's lovely, inquisitive members share such snippets so others in need of such help can make informed decisions.

Had I not been DX'd & made fully aware of the damage carbs 'could' do to T2D's, I'd never have come across this in relation to my impaired vision.

No one mentioned diet to me in any shape, at my various eye appointments , though TBF that might be because of my type being operable, under certain conditions.

But I'd wager, even if low carb could have helped my condition, I rather doubt anyone would have considered advising me on it, if the Eatwell is anything to go by.

So I do feel sorry for others, where in some instances, such as this, there might well be 'other' options (aka diet, etc) that could be of benefit, that will, in all likelihood never be mentioned at any stage.

Long live the forum & posts such as yours @MrsA2 .

Knowledge is king.

Hope all goes well for you.

I know background retinopathy can improve with good control, but all I know otherwise is that my eye specialist once told me that damage to eyes is caused by wide variations in bgs?
I had no idea that good control could improve macula oedema so take that as really good news.

My consultant ophthalmologist (who I see for congenital problems) says the best thing for eyes is to keep sugars as low as possible. As I've already lost most of the sight in one eye, that's good motivation enough for me.

Low carb.. I hit it with aplomb.

Sorted my stuff out lowered my A1c with avengiance.

Thought I’d got away with retinopathy, then got kicked in the teeth with something I had never even heard of a few years back..
Macular oedema..

Treated with anti-VEGF injections. No further issues.

I would suggest doing low carb in stages. “Decompress?”

Hi, Was the fast drop in sugars what brought yours on? and how many injections did you need before it stabilised? or is it ongoing. I am about to begin the 800cal diet to see if I can lower mine, but think what I have done already may have been drastic, as went from 77 to 56 pretty quick, still a long way to go though.
Hi,

I believe it could have been..
after something I read regarding “short sharp shocks” to BG stabilisation & detriment to eyes.

From memory, there may have been 10 or 12 in the right eye (1 a month.)
But after the 6th in the right, they detected MO needing 4 in the left.
At one point I was having both eyes done at the same time..

I still go for monitoring, but the last jab I had in the left must have been in 2018?

That is actually really reassuring, it sounds like it was really effective for you in not needing to continue, as the thought of needing one every month for years is just scary (seen a few people mention they have had over 80 or so), I wish it could just be one injection and miracles occur, as they gave me the talk about all the 1 in 2000 complications of all the things that can go wrong, and the more you have the injection the higher chances of complications, and the idea of all the things that can go wrong, is just scary. I know they have to say it, but it really isn't great for anxiety.
I spoke to other people in the waiting room who’d pretty much lost count.

They started me on an anti VEGF drug called “Lucientis.” Then “Eylea.”

I appreciate the concerns on first hearing the news,
I’m in no position to give up the privilege to drive.
But sor far, so good.
