Many of you will know my posts regarding leg cramp, etc., and that I would have won the Olympics if such an event existed for the most severest type of cramp imaginable - and, on one occasion, causing unconsciousness. Also, you will have observed a tirade from me if any mention of Quininine Sulphate was prescribed because of the damage it has done to my kidneys.

I am now rather desperate - I let my doctor try Lyrica on me for one week (Google will show manufacturer's bulls..t as to its efficasy for leg pain and cramp) and all it has done is to increase spasms with additional side effects of dizzy spells, loss of balance and constipation.

Having members say how good Magnesium was I always thought I had a last resort and the time has now come for me to enjoy that. Off to the Apotek (chemist in your language) I went - a National Chain to boot - and confidently asked for 375 gm tablets of Magnesium. They stared at me as if I was a confused bule (foreigner) and, after looking through the book, - an entire listing of drugs available in Indonesia - looked at me with a sympathetic smile - "Not available in Ind".

Will those that posted their preference and usage of Magnesium please confirm whether the 375 gm tablets were pure Magnesium or actually Magnesium supplements? To my mind these boxes of Vitamin Supplements are a very expensive 'con' and, as the prices here for such items are astronomical, I do need to know. I should add that supplements with Magnesium included are available here but one never knows the mg weight of each constituent or whether the product is bulked with less expensive chemicals.

Your help would be gratefully received,

Rob

Football. Bad manners.
I take 2 x 150mg of magnesium citrate every day. This is apparently the most easily absorbed form of the mineral.

I was actually having a "rest" from this supplement when I last posted about leg cramps, wondering if the cramps were associated with Metformin. Since resuming the mag. cit. I have almost stopped having them, and the few I do have are not so severe.

Initially I started taking magnesium for blood pressure, and sure enough my BP rose - 136/100 - during the period I wasn't taking them.

I buy mine from ebay in a variety called Magasorb. Plenty of others are available. This one definitely states that it is magnesium citrate, while I can't be sure with others, and my local chemist's and supermarket's tubs don't specifically say citrate.

You can't overdose on magnesium - you'll know if you have because any constipation will quickly clear up  . Same effect as a strong dose of Milk of Magnesia.

I use Magnesium sulphate, teeny little tabs that disolve on the tongue and I don't take them all the time either, only when I start getting leg cramps, I take 4-5 of these and don't need again for months
Could you maybe get some online??

Hi BaliRob

Leg cramps are not nice ,MY BIL has suffered for years with them, he's been on Quininine like you for years with not much joy...I told him about the Kidney connection so he has been off them a good while now , no difference on or off it ,so to save his kidneys he may as well be off them....He has just had a CAT scan after numerous exasperated visits to his GP for the pain in his calfs , turns out he has lived with 3 slipped disks for years and this has caused the horrific leg cramps....so an op is on the cards

Anyway thanks for posing about the kidney connection a while back as this prompted me to take a look into it and warn him

Rob I take Magnesium Malate, Citrate is good but Malate is the most Bio available to the body, I train twice daily now for ultra Marathons and NEVER get cramp, so it works for me. I use Source Naturals 1,250 MG two a day, on and off.

Hope it helps you and you get some relief

I opened my post on the Forum this morning and it was just like Christmas !!! Thankyou so much for your three very valuable replies. Believe it or not I just did not give Ebay a thought regarding supply even though I buy all of my test strips on their site. I suppose Citrate and Sulphate are the same. I also have Fallenstar's 'new' idea (at least I have never heard of it) which is Malate but I do not quite understand "Source Naturals" - is this a product name?

So, after all of the recent problems on this Forum - Viv, zoecream and Fallenstar have proved that it can be used properly in the interests of Diabetics - again, thankyou very much.

I am now off to do some experimenting.

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob

Yes that is the product name, I'm sorry I don't remember where I got them from, Amazon, I think

Another one which may be worth a try and help is, Epsom Salts, I buy big tubs of the stuff on line, again Amazon. Pegasus is good but there are loads of deals out there, so I swap. Basically its Magnesium sulfate, you can get food grade and non-food grade for baths, the food grade is expensive. It is great for aches and muscle cramps, also chill's the heck out of my boy, it's great for lots of things, really helps to aid restful sleep. If you cannot tolerate Magnesium orally then this is a good way to go, it goes through the Dermis and will get into your system...so you could try some Epsom Salt baths and see if they help you too.

I really hope you get some restbite from it and find something that may help

Thankyou Fallenstar,

I will search Amazon with the info you gave me. With the other members' suggestions I can probably mix n' match to make a full-time recipe.

I am very grateful because when these cramps come on the whole lower body on one side goes into seizure - you can imagine the funny looks I get when sticking a leg out at right angles or standing up when on my motorcycle they must think it is a MotoGP stunt ha ha ha.

With best wishes,

Rob
