Hi.
Been on metformin for 6 years and blood sugar has been fine.Around 5.0
I am 74 and in the last six months despite increasing dose of metformin,it has gone up to 6.8.Does it stop working or is it just age related.?
Hi
Metformin doesn't affect the glucose produced from starches and sugars in your diet. It does reduce the ability of your liver to create glucose itself from stores. How metformin does this isn't understood (according to the current medical textbooks (eg Bilous and Donnelly
Handbook of Diabetes). So as how it works isn't understood, it's probably unlikely that a change in how it works is understood either.
Of course, it's also possible that something else in your lifestyle affecting blood glucose levels has changed - additional medication, change in diet, or activity.
