OK. After ultra low carbing for a couple of weeks, I saw it is possible to go to low in a post by Borofergie (I hope I spelled that right) I have been trying to stay at 10 or less grams of carbs a day, but have now upped them to between 20 and 30. I am a bit scared of what this will do to my readings as they have been so good, and I am also worried that my weight loss will stop. This is something I really need to do for all aspects of my health. but realise that I am really restricting myself for long term sustainability.

Fingers crossed it is all going to be alright

Sounds sensible! Remember, you need to end up on a diet you can live with forever even if you Ultra low carb for a while to shift weight. I can't imagine less than 10grams a day! Good effort though!

Thanks Grazer. It has got easier and easier, but I am really looking forwards to my beef butty at supper time tonight!

Wow 20-30 carbs a day whats your diet like I'd love to know what you eat typically in a day.

No, I am going up to that, I have been eating around 10 a day.

Lots of meat, fish and cheese. Eggs, salad, mayo, cream, cauli, leeks, lots of sugar free jelly. That`s it really. It sounds more restrictive than it is.

I am introducing ground almonds and bringing back in Burgen bread, I might even go crazy and have a bit of fruit, berries obviously!

Have a look at Viv's Modified Atkins Diet on the Sticky Threads section. It has useful lists of foods you can eat to keep to 25g - 30g carb per day. This is the diet I follw (except for the odd lapse!) and after 18 months my BG levels are nearly at non-diabetic levels much of the time.

Jeannesmum, you should have no trouble losing weight on 25 - 30g of carb daily. Remember, though, that weight loss will naturally slow after a while, so don't obsess about it. Good luck! :D

Maybe I gave the wrong impression, but I don't think that it's necessary to go down as far as 10g. If you want to stay in ketosis, then 30g is a good target to aim for, and should give you lots of room to eat plenty of veg. I basically try and aim at zero carbs other that those in salad and veg (with a bit of dressing thrown in) plus I usually eat a low-carb protein bar for breakfast (7g). I'm probably at about 20g most days.

If you spread your 30g out across three meals, you shouldn't be seeing any spike at all. My BG rarely goes above 6mmol/l ever (apart from exercise induced liver dumps).

Well-done, it sounds like you're doing brilliantly.

Here is some motivation for you:

I'm on Very low carbs too and stick to it most of the time. If I stray a little as in having a cubic inch of birthday cake, I don't see much change in my meter and I don't worry about it. You just have to "suck it and see"

Thank for the advice, and well done me for getting your user name right.

I think it is far more sensible to up my carbs. I would be struggling to get much variety if I didn`t. I have planned ahead for my whole days eating, and it is going to be in the mid 20`s today. I am pleased with that. Only a pound loss this week, but at least it has gone down, as for ketosis, I got my sticks this morning, and there is only a trace :(

Jeanne

I tend to move around a bit carb wise depends on what we fancy to eat mostly. I now know my daily carb limit is around 80g and a main meal limit of around 50g anything more than that and my BG's do begin to show it. This week my average has been around 40g last week around 25g other weeks as high as 65g. Have no real idea what that does to the ketosis thing, I've never got more than a ++ but borofergie tells me I'm doing ok and as long as my BG's are good and I'm losing weight I don't really mind!

Sound like you're doing great. Keep it up.

I read it can vary throughout the day, so I am going to try to find the best time to test, not that it matters as long as the weight is coming off really.

Thanks for the support everyone x

You are doing brilliantly. Your diet really is varied and healthy. I find a VLC diet is really easy and I managed under 10g of carbs every day. Today is 6g with the lovely chicken and leek soup you suggested. In time if I can get my appetite back on track I may increase slightly, but to be honest I really enjoy the VLC foods, so I don't feel deprived. I actually like this diet, it has made me feel better than I have in a long, long time. Anyway, well done you! xx

Thank you. It isn`t really that I feel deprived so much as the fact this is for ever. I do like the odd sandwich I must confess.

Of course the reason we started this is for our BG. Mine is now usually between 4.5 and 5.7, with the very rare reading in the sixes. That is the biggest success of all :D

In other words you managed to almost completely reverse your diabetes with just a few changes to your diet! That's brilliant! Low carb rocks for sure!

It sure does. My Hb1Ac at diagnosis was 7.0 I am sure it will be under that when I have my next one. Low carbs for me, is the only way. I would love to be able to have creamy mashed potato, but I can't, so I don't. I have found low carbs does work. Jeanne, you're an inspiration to me, and many others I should think. Again, well done. x

The diagnosis made me pull myself together with my eating Fergie. I was half attempting to diet for a long long time. This could well be the best thing to have happened to me. Another fantastic side effect is the elimination of fatigue. I am now sleeping between 7 and 8 hours a night, and not the 12 plus I was doing. I feel like a newish woman.

Strangely enough having those few extra carbs seem to have stablized my readings. 4.9 before tea, 4.9 two hours later.I have been getting the two number close, but never exactly the same. I am chuffed :-)

Well done Jeanne! I feel like that too - before diabetes the new fitter me was always 'just about' to happen. With Type 2 it had to happen NOW! Slowly but surely we're getting there.

By the way, who and what is the small person trying to stand on your palm?

Thanks Viv. I needed this scare to sort me out. I just hope all the benefits keep me at it.

The titchy dog is my puppy Esmai. She will be ready to come and live with me at the end of next week. My daughter and I mated our chihuahuas, and her dog had three pups. I am rather mad. I will have four dogs when she is here, as well as four cats, two parrots, five chicken a bantam plus a pond full of fish. I love my pets. They can be preferable to a lot of people.

Hiya,

Sorry to be a pain, I've searched for this thread (Vivs modified diet) and can't find it at. Does anyone have a link to the thread. Please?
