My low carb/IF Diet - BG and progress

Well done for resisting. I've got some oppo in the freezer but don't want my kids to know it's in there so may have a midnight feast! Or save it for tomorrow. I'm going to have to make room in freezer so that I can make low carb ice pops or something. Never gonna get through the summer without something!

It's OK, Debs, you only have a few days to survive, until the weather breaks a bit.

Sorry, sorry, I know that wasn't very nice of me, but I'm utterly adoring this heat!

It's interesting the fasting test. Are you going to have a glucose intolerance test too where you have to wait two hours after drinking the dunk? When I did that one, I was dead on upper limit (think it was 16) and tried to explain that I had been low carbing for months and therefore my body would have not responded well to it. The doctor just gave me the 'what the £@8/! Are you on about' look and carried on telling me I was officially diabetic which I contested! It was at this point she offered me metformin and I refused.

Well done on your positive attitude towards the famine!! I'd also look at it as an opportunity to lose a bit more. I think I lose about half a pound with every 24 hr fast. Doesn't seem much but it's giving me a kilo a week shift which I'm happy with.

And as for you @AndBreathe.......I'm glad you're enjoying the heat. Today they made us do PE in the unshaded playground where the temp must have peaked at 36c . I'm so over it but feeling lucky that we've only just had this temp now. The classroom is like a goldfish bowl and retains the heat all day. It ain't pretty!!!! X

So today was my last day at work and I got lots of lovely thank you presents - many consisted of chocs which I will not touch, but one of them had something like this

How cool are these?! I'm going to use them for making diabetic friendly ice poles and ice cream!!!

So glad I off now and can take my time around the house. Have a rare day to myself tomorrow which I will spend wisely....

Don't you just love it when you get that epiphany having been dieting for what seems forever and finally realise that you are looking much better and have actually gotten slimmer?! I had a taste of it today during sales shopping and bought myself a dress that I never thought I'd get away with!

Roll on next week's beach trip for two days

I don't think I would surviver a glucose tolerance test. But in addition to the cholesterol , I'm going to have a buncha immune tests so kinda worried about whether blood hemolyzes in the bod as well as the test tube?

I have absolutely no idea about any of that! But good luck xx

What do you drink on fasting days? also how long do you fast?

Hi.
I have two coffees in morning, then rest of day is green tea and water. I break the fast at around 6pm for dinner, having started fast after dinner on the previous evening....I'm going to try breakfast to breakfast during the summer.

Well, it's gone 7.30 and I'm not at all hungry so will carry on fasting til tomorrow lunchtime if I can psychologically get past the length of time in my head!

I've been nil by mouth all day except pills just now and drinks.....

Did you see " trust me i'm a doctor last night debmcgee, they are saying that the artificial sweetners in it are bad causing more people to get diabetes....ho hum or pre diabetes.
Dr. Fung also cites studies about artificial sweetener's increasing insulin although they don't affect blood sugar. He says that they can push it up 20%. I don't know how much you have to have to get that result though. If you're really working on your insulin resistance then the diet stuff could be counterproductive. And it's a myth that Stevia is different he says. Good marketing I guess. I find it's harder to give up sweetener in my coffee and iced tea than it was to give up bread! But your success is amazing, so you must be doing great work

I quit Diet Coke for this reason. From what I've read, sweeteners can raise bg and do affect weight because it spikes insulin production. I wish this wasn't the case. I've also heard that stevia in liquid form is the best but all should be avoided.

I've cut down on it all but am still probably having too much. I use coffee syrup in the mornings - only a small bit and I still Sweden my Greek yoghurt and cream when I have it but I think that's about it. Because of the fasting, I'm definitely eating way less than I used to. I do miss the Diet Coke sometimes though but let myself have it when I go out to eat.

This morning I got 5.7 and I'm 36 hours into my spontaneous longer fast. Had a few pangs over night and did not sleep as well as I would normally but it's been totally bearable. My mum is coming to stay for a few days as its my eldest daughter's 8th birthday. Mum likes to eat put a lot so this could be hard.....

TGI Fridays is for the birthday lunch tomorrow. Today, I reckon it'll be something like Harvester and then on Sunday she wants to go to this fab dessert place where they make the most amazing waffles with ice cream. I was planning on fasting for that but it's torture. I'd actually really prefer not to go at all but I can't really...

I'm feeling a lot healthier.

I also calculated what my pain doctor's goal weightloss for me would amount to - it's going to be a long slog but I'm definitely prepared to give it a go. I'm still focussing on 10kg increments and currently am 3 away from the next block. I've a lot of kids stuff to get through over the summer but really want to stick to losing a kilo a week. I'd be gutted if I undid all this hard work but life has to continue. That's the worst part of this journey. We have it for life and will never be free from it.

Have a wonderful day y'all. I'm so glad weather is cooler and sun is hiding behind a cloud. Makes such a difference!

I'm planning on going out for civilised drinks with my friend tonight - not been out for 3 months! Again, I will not go wild...

Well done on nudging up your IF length:)

You are being consistent in the midst of a busy life:)

I am only 3 months post diagnosis and my second A1C came in at 29. It was originally 53 and all I've done is permanently changed my lifestyle to one you have adopted:)

Well done on reaching 5.7 this morning. I've been reading your blog and know how hard you have been working in it.
I have quite high early morning readings too - so annoying! I became T2 as a result of taking steroids for arthritis, fortunately I was in a pre diabetes study so my T2 was discovered just as I was finishing the three month course of stetoids. I was thrown off the study and was put on 'diet and exercise' for three months by my own GP and given the 'eat carbs with every meal' diet sheet - utterly deadly for me. I bought Dr David Cavan's book Reverse Your T2 Diabetes, read that from cover to cover - it is truly inspirational - thought about it fir a week then bought my own blood sugar meter - I mean how can you know what's happening to your body if you don't test your blood.
I discovered then that my nice healthy gluten free oat bran breakfast muffins spiked my blood, as did my nice healthy jacket potato lunch, in fact anything with as much as a sniff of grain healthy grain or not - spiked my levels. So I recorded everything I ate every day, cut out snacks and cut out Diet Coke! Very sad that but I only drink water, decaf tea and coffee now.
I've been 'eating to the test' ever since, I have lists of everything I have eaten since last December! How obsessed is that I ask? Anyway, at my three month HbA1c my results had gone from 6.7% (44mmol) - I was 6.2% (44mmol) and pre diabetic when I started the study the year before - to 5.6% (38mmol) and my weight has come down from 73.6kg to 55.6kg. To look in the bright side if I hadn't been given the steroids when I was taking part in a pre diabetes study then I would most likely gradually have become T2, this way I was given a real shock and got a real grip of myself.

So - have a lovely summer holiday, I hope you get some decent weather that you can enjoy without being surrounded with a class of kids. Enjoy your night out and good luck with your mum and her eating out habit

Well done Kevin that is absolutely fantastic - I'm green with envy (in the nicest way) of your 29 - I'd love to be that low. It really is worth changing your lifestyle isn't it. LCHF is definitely the way to go, there is no way I would ever want to go back to my former carb laden diet.

@Lizzie2. Wow you've done great! I too tested everything I've eaten and built my meals around what impact they have on my bg. It really is the only way to tell what you're doing to yourself. I like watching Fung when he talks about docs berating patients for not improving health after following advice that is destined to fail. That's been me my whole life (without the docs) and I'm going to beat it.

I wanted to check body stats this morning following the extended fast. It's interesting - the pound I've lost overnight has come from lean mass and not body fat. I wasn't shocked - I've not been weight lifting for a week due to heat and also read it in Fung's book that it will sort itself out after 48 hours and continue to use fat stores instead of muscle. I've got a few of my real-world friends telling me I'll go into starvation mode etc and I just can't be ***** to explain the research so just listen to them bash on about it. They should really know me better than that!! I'm well read and don't make substantial changes without a lot of consideration!

Ha, ha. Starvation mode Like your attitude to your real world friends. Pity they wouldn't do a bit of research for themselves and find out the benefits of low carb / intermittent fasting. I imagine most people could benefit from it.
My next door neighbour is a pain, she studies me annually and keeps telling me I'm getting 'so thin' - as if! I just say cheerfully 'no I'm not, It's just that I was so chunky before that I look thin now, I'm not really and my BMI is slap bang in the middle of the upper and lower limits for my height.' I suspect she thinks she knows better but like you say - who cares. She knows I eat a lot - she sees me, I just eat more wisely.

I think it makes people question themselves and they try and level by making comments....Shame everyone can't be so genuinely happy for progress like they are on here!!! X

Well I lasted 41.5 hours and could've carried on but didn't want to make others feel awkward with me not eating. Broke it with salad, half rack of ribs, Diet Coke and sweet potato fries.

Felt really full after not much. Have made several trips to the loo too - I guess that's the aftermath of a longer fast. Still a good clean out never did anyone any harm....

I'm now going to not eat again til tomorrow lunch time. Going out tonight for drinks so I'm not sure how this is gonna work....

Think I undid all the good last night when I went out with my pal. Only meant to have a couple of glasses of wine but ended up with wine, g&t and then spritzers! Then we danced til 1am...

Totally forgot to test this morning so no idea what that lot did to me but I'm sure it's not pretty!!

It's my eldest's 8th birthday today and we are off to TGI Fridays. I was going to abstain but my mum pointed out that Fung says you're allowed to celebrate for special occasions, so if he approves, then why not?! I may even have dessert.....
