Honestly I’m in shock! I feel so pathetic my reaction is like I’ve been told I have terminal cancer? It’s stupid!! I need to stop this emotion but I can’t!
Been waiting for results, convinced I had type 2 turns out it’s type 1! Why do I feel this way? Like I’ve had a terminal diagnosis? I haven’t! I know I can manage this! I know much much worse things happen!! Why am I taking so bad????

Well on the “ bright side” you are now, with appropriate treatment, diet etc. hopefully going to be able to start feeling better, and coming back to life. I found all the initial overwhelming panic and sadness helped by trying to come up with specific questions or doubts and then getting those questions answered, either by a professional or peer support. That way I felt like I was making measurable progress and being able to take some control of my body instead of just feeling overwhelmed with it all. Having a CGM helped a lot as I was able to see quickly the effects of certain foods or activities and how I could contribute to my wellbeing in the now instead of it all being just a blood test in many months time or the prospect of a side effect in some distant years.
Reading that back I don’t think I’ve expressed it very eloquently but I do hope you find some measurable successes to boost how you feel about yourself and start to feel better soon. You’ll find lots of and support on here from some very knowledge people.

I can totally understand why you feel like this. While T2 you can hope to control your diabetes with diet and/or oral meds, whereas once T1 there is no going back, it's insulin all the way. (Assuming your cpeptide has already reduced enough for insulin to be necessary).

On the other hand, T1 really isn;t a death sentence, and modern ever improving technology really can be a massive help. I have more dietary freedom than many T2s because I can inject for my food, and if I get sick or need a steroid injection I can give myself extra insulin rather than having a brisk walk as my best option for lowering my glucose. And T1s get better access to insulin tech on the NHS than T2s do. There are pros and cons to both diseases, though obviously we'd all prefer not to have any diabetes at all.

Have some virtual hugs. (And it might be worth going into your account details and changing your diabetes type to T1 from "other")

Uh... You got diagnosed with something you're stuck with for life, and will require even greater adjustments than T2 would... You do realise that a diagnosis is a cause for trauma and grief, right?

You are entitled to every single emotion you're feeling right now! So stop kicking yourself about for it, feel it as much as you need to, cry, scream in a pillow, whatever.... And when you get it out of your system, for however long that takes, you'll have a grip on this whole T1 thing and live life as much as you normally would have.

Show yourself some kindness.
Hugs,
Jo

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
Not bloomin surprised - I felt exactly the same, to me it was the end of my health and a change of life and the fear of the unknown, the feelings I had were quite intense and I struggled massively, but that's around 12 years ago now and I am still alive and now fitter than ever.

Yes it does add a new level of complexity to life, but once you have got your head round it and accepted it then it does become alot easier, just keep talking, learn as much as you can, find a hobby, sport or exercise you enjoy and focus on rebuilding your life with your t1 in it. Have a read of the thread of what every newly diagnosed t1 should know too, that's a useful post.

Hi and big hugs to you....

Type 1 of almost 50 years here and i started with just urine tests, needles like harpoons and glass syringes!
You are having a libre well i have one and it makes understanding so much easier but it would've been sci fi 50 years ago.

Im working and driving and off to the canaries next month.

So please don't despair the future is bright....

All the very best

Tony

Hi @LynsK I was diagnosed 15 months ago, and definitely spent at least the first 3 months in tears and catastrophising about everything, definitely got better after I saw a consultant at 4 months in, and better still with my Libre after 6 months. This forum is an amazing place and has helped me through it all, so I really hope you realise your reaction is normal and you'll get through those early days and into a new rhythm and only worry about the stuff that you really need to, instead of EVERYTHING!

Hello! Just wanted to let you know I was diagnosed in December, given a libre 2 last week (time in range 13% today which is wonderful NOT) and will be taking my first basal insulin injection tomorrow and I can’t stop crying. You are not alone in feeling this way and please do reach out (can we send messages on here?!) if you need some support as you are not alone in this! X

Hi and welcome , let me say you’ve got it spot on , you don’t have a health sentence, and to be honest I’d rather have type 1 than type 2 , once youve found out what works for you ( which is the absolute key to managing diabetes) there is no reason why you can’t live a long and relatively normal life, yes diabetes is a daunting prospect but its now a learning process and you realise it’s not a death sentence and by the sounds of it you re not happy that you initially feel that way so that’s a terrific starting place , plus you’re here where you’ll find loads of great people with loads of experiences to share ,
