New dianosis - confused

If readings remain above 14 consistently you can feel unwell, tired and etes can also be affected...
Levels upward to 20 consistently then advice ought to be gained from 111 or out of hours gp etc.. there may be signs of unquenchable thirst.

T1's are told to test for ketones but as GPs wont even give strips to T2's then its very unlikely you will have been given ketone strips. Normally in t2's on meds (not insulin) they would not be given ketone sticks.

If hubby wears glasses or even if he doesnt he may find his eye sight has blurred... it is worth getting etes tested perhaps but until levels stabilise lower it wouldnt really be worthwhile investing in ant lens changes etc.
Is it dizziness or are his eyes affected with blurriness say when watching tv? Etc..

Thank you, he's been feeling very tired, hungry and thirsty for a long time now but we associated it all with side effects of his meds as they are notorious for hunger and drowsiness. He's been having a lot of problems with skin breakdown and infection for about 12 months and again we had put it down to his mental health and dificulties maintaining personal care. He's just shown me it's flared up again and said the GP said it was probably linked.

Thankfully his blood glucose is 14.6 this evening which is a surprise, as 111 were no use at all the other night. I take it that the Metformin is kicking in.

once bg levels are reduced due to better diet, it appears that very many of the bad effects can be reversed, some quickly, some much more slowly.
I should not have used the term "better diet" here. I meant "better suited to people who don't cope well with too many carbs". IMO some lucky people are able to consume carbohydrates as part of a balanced diet without raising their blood glucose levels. I don't want to imply that everyone's grapes are sour!

Well the combination of diet and metformin is doing the trick down to 11.5 this morning :-)

Just had some delicious peppers stuffed with mince, courgette, onion, tomato, mushroom and cheese. Think I'm starting to get my head around what I can cook.

Glad levels lowering.

Do you have to increase dosage at any time? Or will this be decided in Jan?

At 11.5, its lower and still early days.. do ensure that festive time can still be enjoyed.... glad you are finding new yummy ways with food... well dine. So glad to read your update...

He's only taking the metformin once a day so far on pharmacists advice but prescribed for twice a day. Pharmacist said to start second one after a few days to reduce side effects so probably time to do that soon. Not sure if best to do that before Christmas or not if it might make him feel rubbish again we have some long drives coming up but on the other hand need to get him in the best place medically as soon as possible.

I spoke to a dietician I work with yesterday, she's not a diabetes specialist, but was advocating LCHF diet too.

Hubby had some bits he shouldn't have yesterday and spiked bg so the meter has been useful in him realising that he can't do that.

On the downside I'm finding the new regieme very expensive. Any top tips for LCHF on a budget very welcome.

My latest budget find is in Morrisons - frozen wild fish from Alaska (so the least polluted we can buy). Salmon portions 4 for £3 and pollock (white fish) 4 for £2. Aldi is my top shop for nuts and camembert cheese (the latter only £0.99p). Catapillar shared this top tip from Iceland a while back:
"as well as being lazy, I'm cheap! So I was pretty happy to see today that Iceland have started doing 4 steam bags of cauliflower rice for £2 or green veg rice made of broccoli, courgette, spinach, kale & seaweed (which sounds nice):
Will have to see how it compares to the broccoli rice, which I am a big fan of. But the Iceland green veg rice is less carbs (3g) than the Sainsbury's broccoli rice (5.3g) and I don't often eat kale or seaweed so a good option to throw a bit more veg variety in."
I made a special trip to Iceland for the multi-greens rice and was well pleased (thank-you @catapillar). One bag is ample veg for one person (I found it filling), or would do for 2 if there was another vegetable as well.
