Ask your diabetes team about how you learn to adjust your dosss yourself...

They should be grateful that a newly diagnosed wants to do this!!

Jyst say to them that you want to learn as you realise that you have to be able to do this long term to look after yourself with minimal health issues......

We cant advice on what doses you need, but you do need to build up regular contact with your care team... perhaps ask for them to contact you on set days....

Diabetes!!!
Breakfast toast and yoghurt.
Lunch ham and salad sandwich
Dinner fish or chicken. With salad or verges.
Snacks fruits, biscuits, muesli bars.
Drinks tea, coffee, water, sparkling water.
The bread, fruit, biscuits and muesli bars won't help. Cut them back if not completely out and you'll see a huge change.

Hi. I am a new member and have been diagnosed last week with type 1. I have looked for the answers in the forum, however I can’t find what I’m looking for.
I’m a 32 year old male. And was recently self admitted to hospital with bloods in the 30s.
Since then I have been given lantus (10 units in the morning) and novarapid (6 units for each meal) if my bloods are above 15.
I have been logging my levels over the last four days and I can not get my bloods below 15. On average they sit between 15 and 25. Is this doing damage? Do I need to adjust my insulin levels? I’m still very new to this and it seems weird that I can’t get anywhere near the target of between 4-8.
Should I contact my gp or endo and up my dosage?
Thanks.
Sorry for the newbie questions.
Hi Leigh,
I was in almost exactly the same position as you just over a month ago. 34, admitted to hospital with borderline DKA with blood sugars at 43.
I was put onto apidra (12 units with meals) and toujeo (30 units before bed). My first couple of weeks at home saw my bgs in the high teens, and like you, I wasn't happy about it.
However, your levels will come down eventually. You may have to adjust your doses like I did, but don't do anything until your diabetes team has told you. Not sure what the process is down under, but you should have an insulin review pretty soon.
Keep your chin up mate. I know the first few weeks can be a struggle, but I promise you, your sugars will come down soon enough!
In the meantime, there are an awful lot of great people on here who are more than happy to help!

9 months since my T1 diagnosing and I still struggle to maintain bs below 10 for more than 24 hrs. However I was SO ILL like you. I’m now just grateful to still be here in one piece and learning something everyday....Have you ever had a hypo? Boy oh boy they are SCAREY. To be avoided if possible. It’s early days for you and targets will seem impossible. We are all different it seems and even the clinicians are constantly learning. G’Luck, mate :))

Please have your T1 specialists show you how to start taking your own control..

You are right that you need to up insulin.

Currently you would appear to be not helped by having snacks... but when you have been taught how to carb count, adjust doses then snacks for T1's can be fitted in if you want them.

Thank you so much to everyone that has replied.
This community is great. Definitely something a newly diagnosed person needs for comfort and support.
I managed to talk to my educator and she talked to the endocrinologist whom agreed to up my insulin dosage for now.
As for the diet related information I have my first appointment with a diabetes dietitian next week. So hopefully she can clear up most things for me.
Here I was thinking I was eating healthy, but obviously not diabetic healthy.

Hi Leigh lots of good advice already given. Newly diagnosed in Jan where my reading was 40+ by time I left hosp my levels had dropped just below 30. It took 3wks to get my levels below 10, the diabetic nurse would ring each week and my insulin would be adjusted. 3mths on I'm between 4 - 7.5. It just takes time to adjust don't be hard on yourself

And eating 'normally' helps the diabetes team work out your dosages. They will probably ask you to keep a detailed food diary for a few weeks so you can identify the foods that have the most impact on your sugar levels. My nightmare is pasta - & I love pasta!!!

Have you tried the Explore Cuisine low carb pasta? Suprisingly good, former pasta junkie here!

Hi @Leigh.beazley welcome to the pancreatically challeneged club that nobody ever wants to join... It’ll take a while for your levels to come down to normal, and you don’t want to rush that bit too much. You’ve got a lot of info to take on board, and that’s hard enough without feeling like you’re hypo all the time. Your team will show you how to manage your own doses and match them to food etc, so that you can start to take control of it yourself. Early days yet, do be prepared for some down days - mentally it can be a hard diagnosis to get your head around but there will be all the support here if you want it. I’m not wording any of this very well, or even tactfully, I’m sorry - I’m not a morning person!

Make sure you keep some dextrose/glucose tablets on your bedside table or under your pillow in a packet you can open easily should you have a hypo in the night. I have a little tin with a loose fitting lid that I keep mine in, with five tablets (15g glucose) loose from the paper roll so I can just grab them and shove them in my face without thinking too hard about it if I go low. Hypos feel horrible and make you panic, so if you’re prepared, you can deal with them relatively painlessly.
