Pototoes can be ok as long as you use NO butter or Gravy on them. Keep fats to a minimum and supplement with pieces of fruit during the day to keep the hunger pains away. Little and often seems to be the way for us type 2’s.

Really??

Problems! Problems. Gosh I seem to have blipped! Sorry DianaGrace.
I have been looking for links on the web to back up what I said for you. I went on a Dr recommended diet which was ment to cut out fats which allowed as many pototoes as you can aet as lonng as you dont use butter or gravy. Only I can find it at the monment. Aslo I know from the glycemic index (Indicates sugar content) that new potaaotes are lower in natural sugar comapred to Jacket potatoes. ETC ETC. I really need to find the links because limite to word count in theses posts.

don't know what that means Indy51 - I am on one tablet daily 850g since I was diagnosed a few years ago. I have made a commitment to myself today that I will hold off on the bread and all wheat products, and pasta as well as the sugar - for the moment. I am quite limited as I can't have dairy - although I do have a bit of lactose free milk with my tea/coffee and the occasional lactose free yoghurt but that has a bit of sugar in it. Can't be helped, I will try the tomato, cucumber, bit of hard yellow cheese is OK and perhaps a piece of fruit for lunch?

My biggest problem of late in this cold Melbourne weather is I just love hot buttered toast for breakfast, as I don't like cereal and I can certainly do without breakfast - what do you think about my idea?
There are two forms of metformin - the normal and the extended/sustained release version - the name of the drug will normally have XR, SR or ER after it to indicate if it is that type. I've also read that people on the normal version do better if they take it mid meal and that less carbs in the diet will help control the GI symptoms the drug can cause.

Personally, I wouldn't miss breakfast - I find my crustless quiche keeps me going for hours and I also enjoy having a hot breakfast. I also find that going to bed on an empty stomach makes reflux from my hiatal hernia much less likely, so I'm more of the old school saying about breakfasting like a king, etc. I eat much more at breakfast and lunch than I do later in the day/evening.

And book l love Grain Brain by Dr Pearlmutter if you get the download dirt cheap...if that doesnt help you and scare you..... nothing will.
Good advice on diet excellent advice if you dont change in laymans terms.

Hi GDR

I'm afraid I think your Dr is wrong; very wrong. Potatoes have a lot of starch and are best kept to a minimum if diabetic. There is nothing wrong with fat in sensible quantities. I think the Dr is using info which is out of date and shown to be not relevant to diabetes; sorry.

Hi Maggie. You've had a lot of good info from the posters. Nothing is forbidden food-wise in the diabetes game but you need to find out just how much you need to reduce portion size and carbs. The meter will help and occasional exceptions are allowed! I love bread and over the last 10 years have got used to only having 2 slices a day and of wholegrain bread. I do have potatoes, pasta etc but only in small quantities and avoid mash etc. I have quite a bit of cheese and meat protein. My wife who isn't diabetic has been following the same diet as me but tougher low-carbing and has lost a lot of weight and holding it. She is really pleased but it does require discipline.

Daibell .... l am shocked :eek:Shocked l tell you that you think a dr could be out of step with reality ....o_O
Yes, unbelievable isn't it. Like my diabetes Dr said to me when I was 'starving' myself to keep my blood sugar below the teens said I should just have a normal, healthy diet as if I was stupid. She didn't spot I was a LADA needing insulin.

Many thanks - do you really stick to no bread or any wheat products and no potatoes? I think that is so wonderful and brave of you, I wish I could do it. I am the same age and am ashamed that my weight goes up and down, and just when I get to seeing it go down, something stops me and I just go back to eating the naughty foods again.

I will have to rethink my eating habits, I certainly need some heavy motivation or a kick up the backside, honestly.

cheers
Maggie
I think it is very brave of you to eat them. look up diabetic complications.

Welcome maggie.
I am type 2 and I also find my weight hard to control. Though on initial diagnosis I lost 3 stone (19 Kilograms) just by changing my diet. I managed to keep that off for a little while however that changed and old habits crept back. I am still 2 stone lighter than I was but really need to be lighter. I do have trouble with exercise as I have Osteoarthritis in a few joints which makes exercise painful.
Keeping carbs to a minimum, like no bread does help enormously. Pototoes can be ok as long as you use NO butter or Gravy on them. Keep fats to a minimum and supplement with pieces of fruit during the day to keep the hunger pains away. Little and often seems to be the way for us type 2’s.
That I am sorry is pure *****.

Some bipolar meds give warning anout weight gain. Bipolar can also have a significant part to play in the lack of concentration to eating well and healthily because of mood swings...
A friend of mine who has bipolar (severe) has been able to stick to low carbs and higher fat diet now for 54 days, seen weight loss (despite meds). Somewhere there is info that if you can stick to doing something (giving up ciggies, low carbs etc) for 30days then you should be able to stand a much better chance of keeping to it....

Loving life
