NEWBIE alert! (aka Nutter alert)

Re: NEWBIE alert!

weheeellllll

the meeting was much as anticipated.

you need to lose weight (really? no spit sherlock) eat lots of complex carbs (said no chance mate) but once I'd explained the readings of my bg meter over the last couple of weeks inreaction to carbs (at much eyebrow wiggling) she agreed it might be sensible for a diabetic wanting to lose weight to avoid heavy carb diet. result, well kinda.

aparently I had a fasting long term glucose test last OCtober (2007) which was sky high and should have been referred for diabetic management back then, but hey, it's only me lol .

meds have adjusted to my stomach (I would say it's the other way around but nahhh ... makes more sense this way).

will start statins in a few months (any thoughts? warnings? will my hands fall off or anything?)

my cholesterol came back as 5.0 which I understand is normal for "normal people" lol but high for diabetics. being as the only way I have found to cope with decaf (makes me want to spit just typing that) coffee is by adding a dash of cream, that probably isn't gonna change!

on the up side, have tried "mock mash" by mashing cauliflower with a little butter and adding grated cheese. tastes very cauliflowery but is divine anyhow, so cures my upcoming winter need for stodge.

having been low-carbing since finding the voice of sanity (ie, you lot here!!) and although the weight is still not shifting off (******!) I feel so much better than before.and bg readings are getting better, partially because of the metformin I guess but probably mostly because I've quit breat and rice and pasta. Can quite happily live without rice 99 days from 100 but may have to cave in and make my signature dish (risotta al funghi) before I forget ;) pasta, apart from the fact I do a killer veggie lasagne (might try sliced aubergine??) it's not a problem.

almost ate the woman at the bakery in morrisons the other day though ... she had thelast tiger stick (bread made with sesame oil with a nice nice crust) ... hmmmmm ... missing bread.

apart from that I have no cravings, little hunger. it's surprising actually how cutting carbs has almost completely removed my hunger... something which was occasionally manic ;)

anyhow, enough of my blah ... have had a long term glucose test done being as the doctor who diagnosed me didn't order one *doik*

have fun all and stay ... uhmmm ... sugar free? lol

best, Jem xxx

As for losing 10% I think thats all I have left!!! when I found the pepper mill in the fridge today I knew things would never be the same!!!!

At 15 months, you can't blame the baby ... but don't worry, soon you will ... I don't know which of our boys (if it was) "helped" by putting the big jar of salad cream away without the top screwed on. My wife took it out of the dining room cupboard by the lid. The jar dropped no more than 18" but somehow the contents shot out -
across the carpet;
up the wall (newly papered);
& hit the ceiling.
Hanging on the picture rail was a brand new plain green dress, right in the line of fire

Re: NEWBIE alert!

I can blame whatever I like!!!! I promise you after having ben I have never been the same. Ben decided on saturday at a party to squeeze a ketchup pot that hard it shot up his arm and over his face, over the party table, over the chairs and onto the floor. He found it hilarious and I just looked like a typical harrassed mother cleaning it up, glad it was a family do!

Yes, don't! There is no evidence that statins have any benefit for women (just ask your doctor for evidence that they do!), your cholesterol levels are fine and the most effective way to improve cholesterol ratios is by lowering insulin levels. I could go on, but it's late and my missus has just opened a bottle of wine.
Bottoms up,

Re: NEWBIE alert!

How can I make cauliflower mash taste of anything but cauliflower? I hate it, its the food of the devil and I know when I get to hell there will be satan (in a sunderland shirt) with plates of cauliflower for me to eat.

Jem, you are a superstar. Am type 2 diabetics allowed red wine, and what happens if you open a bottle and find that you are at the bottom of it before you realise?

Add butter, pepper ,herbs ,personally i love cauliflower but I'm sure you can disguise the flavour .Be inventive!!

Re: NEWBIE alert!

ahhhhh it will pretty much always have an undertone of cauliflower I suppose, although I think if you steam/boil it (that is boil it but like there's a water shortage or something) and put a few strands of saffron in the water then it may help. as will a nice strong-ish cheese (only not at the same time because it would be a huge waste of saffron!) - a little cream or cream cheese would probably help the consistency too ;)

as to the bottle of red ... hmmm ... possibly by pouring a glass of wine and then putting the wine back in the kitchen. Preferably somewhere taller than you are. Although once you've had a glass of the good stuff you might need a trip to A&E after you pile up tins of chopped tomato into a mini tower to try and reach it back down again ...

maybe just not having it on the table might help? or admit that actually you really want to have three glasses and then only do it infrequently?? good luck ;)

thanks Fergus for the heads up on the sterols thingies - I thought the cholersterol level wasn't too bad, but hey, I thought, "my life in their hands" (although the plenty of pasta and rice and bread and potatoes advice can go where the sun doesn't shine) ... cheers for yet again being a fount of knowledge. hope you enjoyed the vino :)

Sue I'm lucky too in that I love cauli --- oh just thought, you could cook it with broccoli, if you don't mind having martian mash? that is if you like the taste of broccoli (again I like it so it's ok for me)

now how does one disguise the taste of soya protein isolate in low-carb-bread and shakes? THAT is the burning question?!?!?!?!?!

Re: NEWBIE alert!

Hi Jem,

If you fry bacon lardons and add them to the cauliflower mash you get it tasting of yes BACON !

You can do this with other boring vegetables like brussels sprouts too. (A xmas favourite in our house)

Re: NEWBIE alert!

thanks hun, not so much for me as I like the taste of cauliflower (*I must be odd lol) but being a vegetarian, the bacon not gonna work for me ;) haha xxx cheers

I am FAR too innocent to even have the vaguest notion of what that joke was all about.

as they call me in europe the band land - I am an "innocent country chick"

*stifles a dirty laugh*
