Newly diagnosed son 4.9 & asleep!

Hi My son (14) was diagnosed last Wednesday (24th July) his levels have generally resided around the teens, but this morning at 7:25 I checked his blood which was 4.9.
My dilemma was do I wake him for a biscuit? Do I wake him for insulin & breakfast?
His units are set at 8 for the time being as we are running with this new diagnosis.

4.9 is good, better than teens ! Check with your nurse/doc ! I think it's fine but always better to check with kids. Good luck

4.9 is fine; but you need to know how much active insulin he's got in him.

How did you do a blood test without waking him though?!

You certainly don't need to treat that as a hypo, but if you are worried just test again in half an hour.

That aside blood sugars tend to rise in the mornings and depending on what insulin regime you are on he probably only had background insulin in his system. So, that figure would probably not be going down. If the background insulin is too high though that might not apply.

If you get a 4.9 after eating then you need to keep an eye on it as it may indicate that the insulin to carb amounts were wrong and he's heading for a hypo.

At 14 he's within the age group for a pump I think; have you discussed that? If one of my children became a Type 1 I'd want them to be on a pump.

Depending on how supportive your diabetic team is you might be able to get them to lend you a constant glucose monitor for a week or so to get a good handle on what is happening to your son's blood sugars overnight. Possibly that is harder to do than say!

Hi and welcome
4 is the hypo threshold so 4.9 is ok and as for being asleep isnt that the norm for teenagers LOL

Re: Newly diagnosed son 4.9 & asleep!

Haha! Yes it certainly is the norm! Though 'normal' as we once knew it has ceased since last Wednesday.

Thank you all for your brilliant help & advice. It all helps & coincides with the advice our Nurse has given us. [WINKING FACE]

I'd like mine to be that on waking!

I have to ask though how can you test him while asleep surely he would have woken up?

Hi. I keep my morning readings above 4.0 to avoid hypos and usually find them in the range of 4 to 5 with the insulin units I use. My nurse said to target around 6. I have gone as low as 3.6 with no effect but we are all different.

Re: Newly diagnosed son 4.9 & asleep!

That's a fine sugar level. No need to wake him on that.

As said, everyone is different. But as he's asleep, and it's on 4 there is no need to panic. I'd say below 3.5. That being said, if he's had high sugars for a while, when he is awake, don't be surprised if he feels faint at a reading of 4.9. When I was first diagnosed I felt low sugars with a reading of 6, because the body had been so used to running high.
