Hi,

After 4 or 5 years of chronic pancreatitis, all up about 12 weeks in induced comas in ICU, I've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (I think depending on the country I'm type 3c.. after necrotic pancreatitis I have basically no pancreas left and the beta cells in my pancreas, what's left of it, have finally decided to stop producing insulin, or not enough).

I am fortunate to have a Libre 2 subsidized and I think everything is going pretty well except that at about 3AM every morning my alarm goes off because I've dropped to 3.8 mmol/L. Average across most days is 6.5-6.7. I'm on a basal dose and bolus with each meal. The graph looks good, in my inexperienced opinion, but I'm still getting into really low moods. This is not easy.

Anyway, I just thought I'd say hi because I've been reading all the posts here for a few weeks and find them helpful and encouraging

Welcome to the forums @plantae .

Are you having to have creon as well? The pancreas unfortunately does more than just produce insulin so T3cs can end up having to take more meds than conventional T1s.

There is a dedicated T3c forum here

Though as far as insulin use goes many T3cs post on the T1 boards.

But I'll tag in @miahara who I know has T3c

Thanks @EllieM Yeah I'm on creon as well... with meals and I should be having it with snacks as well, but I'm being naughty and only having it with my main meals. My snacks are not all that large and usually in response to a low reading on my Libre so I'm not stressing too much about that atm unless someone yells at me :)

Taking creon with snacks is worth doing as it will aid the availability of the nutrients in your food. Your over-all BG level looks pretty good though the nighttime low will be a bit annoying. I've found that adjusting my basal has been the best strategy to employ to manage night-time levels - if I've been experiencing levels on the low side I reduced basal by one unit and if levels have been high I increase basal: this is not something I have to do often but do find my sensitivity to insulin can vary according to temperature and activity level. Changing basal dose does also impact on bolus requirements - it's all a bit of a juggling act!!

@miahara yeah I agree with what you've said about the creon with snacks, I've just been slack. I had to ration my creon last week because the prescription had expired and I had to get a new one from the Dr. I've been on creon for about 2 years, insulin only since end of this October. I didn't think that creon was doing much but boy was I wrong. As soon as I started rationing it waiting for the new prescription my blood sugars went crazy (much lower). I normally take 3 creon with each meal as it says on the bottle and "one or two with snacks" which the specialist said to take with snacks but didn't go so far as putting it on the bottle/label

Yes, the night time lows annoy me. I don't sleep well as it is and the Libre alarm going off every hour is not nice. I've spoken with my Dr and dropped my basal down by two units but it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. Last night I had 1 slice of bread before sleep and had no alarms at all so maybe that's the way to go. Will see how it goes over the coming week... (Edit: I don't like eating just for the sake of it, but if that's what needs to be done then I'll do it... better than being woken up every hour or so I reckon)
