Hi Annie here, diagnosed in February this year, still trying to get my levels regulated - seeing private consultant who is brilliant, so hopefully shouldn't be too long now until I get a more knowledgeable understand of my condition. Struggling with what food I should and shouldn't be eating, I seem to be receiving a lot of contradicted information.

Welcome to the forum Annie :)

Any reason why you are seeing a private consultant, have you had a bad experience with the NHS?

There's a fantastic book that you should purchase called Think Like a Pancreas, it covers most aspects of type 1 diabetes and comes highly recommended on the forum.

Hope your appointment goes well.

Lovely to hear from you and I hope you manage to work out your levels soon :) I'm sure you will! My husband avoided all sugar for the first two months of being diabetic, now he eats pretty much what he wants because of carb counting and manages to keep his sugar around 6/7 - even after scoffing on - Jammy Dodgers! So my view is that once you've cracked your insulin dosage, you can eat pretty much anything.

Working to achieve a balanced diet is always best of course.

My husband also had a battered mars bar whilst on holiday which I do not agree with, but he was fine! :p

Lots of love to you :) let me know if I can help with anything

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

My diabetic team have told me I can eat whatever I want, as long as I'm balancing it with my insulin dose. I'm currently giving 1 unit for every 10g of carbs I eat. I have received a lot of contradicting information so far, but I honestly believe you should take it all on board and then go with what works for you. xxx

One thing I forgot to say was definitely listen to your diabetic team and them only - when my hubby was first diagnosed and admitted to hospital, the nurses gave him so many mixed messages
"Are you hungry? I'll get you some toast, toast is fine!"
"You can't drink that orange juice, it's full of sugar, you won't be having that anymore!"
"Jam rolly polly for pudding, you'll enjoy that won't you?!"
"You cannot have cornflakes, they are out of the question."
"Make sure you have breakfast, cereals are fine."

VERY frustrating. Everyone in the medical profession has an opinion on diabetes, trust your specialist :)
Rant over, sorry!

Ah ha @kirstiemarie91 , I had the same experience while I was in hospital! So confusing at the time! x
It is isn't it?! Because you want to take everything on board. I remember going to Sainsburys before Mike was discharged and buying whole meal pasta, sugar free jelly, sugar free cordial and digestives incase he had a hypo! That is literally all I bought I was that confused :p
Hope you're doing well and looking forward to 2016! :) x
