I am newly diagnosed, 54 years with blood sugars of 77. I lived of carbs pasta most night. Struggling with cutting out, along with no wine, but know I need to for health. I am reading forums and meal ideas for inspiration. I read on forum helpful to test BH, and looking at metres are there any recommendations. Thanks

Hi @Rainbowfairy and welcome to the forum.

Here’s some info on UK meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned.

HOME HEALTH have the Gluco Navii, which is a fairly new model and seems to be getting good reviews if you use this link and select the meter plus 5 packs of strips, and then add the code dcuk (all lower case) at check out you may get money off, I’m not sure if this code is still valid.

Links to the strips for future orders:

There are also discount codes for when you come to buy more strips - "navii5" and "navii10" will give you 20% off purchases of 5 packs of strips and 25% off 10 packs of strips respectively. Again I’m not sure if these codes are still valid.

Then they sell the older SD Code Free, details to be found here!

Discount codes for the Code Free strips, again I haven’t used them in a while.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

SPIRIT HEALTHCARE have a meter called the Tee2 + which is quite popular however I haven’t been able to find it on their website lately.

(Old link which doesn’t work for me now but maybe works for you, if it doesn’t try the phone number below

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...e2-blood-glucose-meter?variant=19264017268793 ) or Google it and you’ll find it’s available from other outlets.

The strips are to be found here:

https://shop.spirit-health.co.uk/co...py-of-tee2-test-strips?variant=19264017367097

Some members have got a free Tee2+ by phoning up to order, with a large order of strips they often throw the meter in for free:

Phone number 0800 8815423

If there is a choice of units of measurement then ‘mmol/L’ are the standard units in the UK, ‘mg/dl’ in the US, other countries may vary.

Don’t forget to check the box if you have pre diabetes or diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

Hi @Rainbowfairy and welcome to the forum.
You may be surprised to hear that many things you may have been told are bad for your health, turn out to be Ok or even good for Type 2 diabetics. Indeed, many things that we have been told are good for our health turn out to be problematic for Type 2 diabetics and so only 'good' for certain types of people (if that).
So whole grains (not so good), tropical fruit (the same), fruit juice (as bad as high sugar colas).
But dry white wine is low in carbs and so is OK (apart from the the same effects of alcohol on a non-diabetic person), but most beers are high in carbs =- so to be avoided. Alternatively most red wines are low in carbs and spirits contain no carbs at all, just use a low calorie mixer.

Thanks very much. I switched to fruit juice rather than cola thinking lower natural sugar. I’m still trying to find way with alternative foods and thankful for the recipe ideas.

Is very good for lists of foods that are low carb, and for recipes. No need to sign up for the paid version unless you want too

Did you check the nutritional information on the pack? Fruit juice is naturally high in sugar, and in acid too, so bad for teeth and for glucose control plus fructose to distress the liver.
These days I am drinking green gunpowder menthos tea a couple of times a week as it is nice in the cold weather and when I have yet another cold. It has no carbs. There is also a caramel tasting tea which is zero carb which I intend to try soon.
