No ketones

Hello I've been a diabetic for just over year and a bit I'm was 25 when diagnosed now 27. I got a question for the people that understand me.
I dont take insulin much none to be more realistic however I dont get ketones until about 3/4 weeks of no insulin. Does this happen to other people because when I did dafne my nurse didnt understand how I'm still standing.

You must still be in a honeymoon stage where your body is producing some insulin. You need insulin to clear ketones. What are your blood sugars like without insulin?

Hi @Diabetes1elmo93 ,
Have you found the answers to your older thread? It's here: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/so-why-no-ketones.173532/
Ketones are not the only problem with diabetes, high blood sugars without ketones are damaging as well. May I ask what your blood glucose is like, usually?
Wish you all the best!

Honeymoon can go on for a long time where you still produce some insulin, although not enough to manage without injected insulin as well.
May I ask why you're not taking your insulin when your sugars are high? Can you ask for help with that?

Hi. I suspect you are in the honeymoon period. Mine went on for around 7 years! Yes, if your BS is high you should be taking some insulin. Although it's important to know your ketone level when your BS is in the 20s/30s it's not the most useful measure otherwise; just use insulin to keep your BS below 10 mmol as often as you can.

I dont take it just for my own reasons...
I just like to carry on as I have been doing before they diagnosed me with type 1.

This means that you are still making a lot of your own insulin. If you weren't making any insulin, you would have ketones within a day of not taking insulin.

Be aware that by not taking your insulin you are shooting yourself in the foot. High blood glucose, which occurs when you don't take insulin, kills beta cells. So it shortens your honeymoon by destroying residual beta cells, Not taking insulin will mean that soon you will not be able to live without a constant supply of insulin.

I'm a T2. Ketoacidosis doesn't really factor into things for me, yet I think you know a lot of T2's end up with serious complications, like neuropathy, necrosis (and resultant amputations or death), kidney faillure, retinopathy/blindness and whatnot. That's not due to ketones, that's because high blood sugars are basically like ground glass working away at veins and organs! Diabetic ketoacidosis kills you quick. High blood sugars'll do it a little slower, but you'll suffer pain and damage on the way. You're young, you'll be inhabiting this body for a while yet. Please start taking care of it? I can tell you from experience, getting older is more fun if it doesn't involve a lot of constant pain and other issues.

Good luck,
Jo
